Ah, thank God it is Thursday! Even if next week comes and I discover I haven’t done a million things that I need to do and blah blah blah. I’m just thrilled for the impending weekend. Not just because yay, a trip to Civilization. But… because I truly value my weekends now!
I realize I am far from the first person to suggest this but… if Little Me knew exactly what Adulthood was like? I wouldn’t have been in such a rush to get here. I figured money, job, transportation, etcetera would open the world. Adulthood would be the time in life where I could go anywhere, do anything, be anybody. That… has certainly not panned out. In many ways, quite the opposite in fact.
So… my day is going to be calling judges, expunging cases older than I am, and watching disturbing Crime Scene videos. So, I may pop over to the BBC and other news sources periodically just to keep my mind engaged.
US election: What would a Donald Trump presidency look like?
Qandeel Baloch: Murdered Pakistan celebrity’s parents speak of pain
Qandeel Baloch: ‘She was a girl just like you’
I realize I can only discuss these issues from my own perspective, history, and background… but “honor killings” don’t make any sense to me. Again, that is exclusively based on my own ideas and background on honor. Honor is created by action, destroyed by action, returned by action. We agree on that part. But where the focus is? Total disagreement. If a member of my family was dishonoring the family (and lets face it, my psycopath cop-hating godmother does do that)… there are honorable ways of dealing with the situation. You can (1) engage her (dangerous, but I’ve tried it before); (2) ignore her (the societal way of removing someone); (3) or tolerate her strategically (and through this, we bring honor to our family). That’s just the way it is done for me. Personal honor… if I wish to be a man of my word, I either keep my promises or don’t make promises. If I break my promise, I have lost honor. The only way to regain that honor is to make amends for the broken promise. That’s how I understand honor. Killing a family member because you think she’s too liberal? My god, I can’t begin to understand that.
FILM REVIEW: Does Star Trek Beyond Boldly Go Nowhere?
Personally, I’ve found this new series of Star Trek movies to be an affront to everything that Star Trek is. I’ve heard that accusation before, often leveled at DS9, and I have argued against it before. However, the new films have completely abandoned so much of what Star Trek is and was about in favor of doing just another “Special Effects Blockbuster.” It is the perfect example of why I am so skeptical of movies in general lately. Because instead of creating a new idea, or even recycling an old one… they take an old idea, scrap it of its heart and soul, slap on some special effects instead of a compelling story… and sell it as is. It rotting pisses me off.
How Japan came to believe in depression
And here it is midday. I’ve filed reports, spoken with judges, kept my office organized. Truly… this is a day (as most of this week has been) that proves.... if a techno-embracing, semi-experienced, competent attorney were made the County Attorney… there would be no need for an Assistant Attorney position… and the county could save $__,000 a year. But apparently… that is asking WAY too much. So I’ll keep dedicating my time today to cleaning up cases for my boss… trying to fix my (increasing number of) mistakes.
Going, then, to a mental health hearing… though, not really. Some of our mental health hearings are “legitimate.” It is an individual with a diagnosable illness that presents in a manner that would be legally construed to be a danger to self or others. However, I’d say a third of our Mental Health issues are family in-fighting.... my son isn’t raising my grandkids properly because he’s crazy… and that kind. And then the other bunch is what we have today. A man, desperately trying to remain independent, despite his advancing years (he’s 2 years older than my boss)… and he is very likely stricken with dementia. And while it is true that “dementia” is a legitimate mental concern… it is significantly different in important ways. The key way? If we had a person suffering from schizophrenia and depression presenting suicidal ideation.... there really aren’t many places we can send them and we really don’t have a lot of options in how we can help them. BUT… old age onset mental issues? Hell, there are three different places we can send them… and all of those options are here in the city, let alone county. eye roll. A generation of people that didn’t believe in mental health issues; housing themselves in myriad “old folks homes;” while still denying assistance and funding for mental health issues.
The rest of the day was spent looking into dead ends, ghost leads, and false flags in cases that may or may not be mine since we can’t seem to get any set, standard reading on that issue from my boss.
Also… a fun (not at all) little computer problem that has been plaguing Cecilia’s computer and my computer… so, since our IT guys are 100 miles away… it was a lot of phone call, wait for a fix, phone call, wait for a fix… then told to wait for several hours.... all of that fun stuff. Really making a long day longer. Bah. Humbug!
Another day like this and I may just use some of my work time/dead computer time and start building Pathfinder characters at work!
