The King’s Bed: Sex, Power and the Court of Charles II by Don Jordan and Michael Walsh (354 pages, including Postscript, Acknowledgements, etc) is the story of the Merry Monarch....in terms of his mistresses and wife. This is an interesting starting point to Charles II, although the style of writing felt a bit contradictory at times. It is generally a fast pace read, slight scandalous in a way, but the prose can still be as dry as one can expect from a history book. I remember reading Courtiers by Lucy Worsley a while back, and the style of writing I found in that book is perhaps more suited to The King’s Bed. Light, scandalous, almost reading like a gossip magazine found waiting to be bought next to a supermarket checkout. But intelligently written. Still, despite this, it’s still an interesting read. I might track down a few more of the duos books. Date Read: June 2016
My next review is the one with potential spoilers....The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury (305 pages) is the story of mankind’s attempts to colonise Mars, as Earth is under threat from global war. This was a fast paced read, from the hostile first contact to the problems of settling in. My main beef with this was that there was a bit part way through the book that seemed to smack of the ending of H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds. I get the idea of differing bacteria, but it never seems to happen the other way (if you, dear reader, have read either book, this sentence might make more sense).
