New York City seemed grand to Gerty and annoying to Fritz. There was just too much stimulation and Fritz didn’t want Gerty running off somewhere. Any four star hotel will do and Fritz settled on The Palace. Gerty had the bags Fritz prepared when he picked her up and she was determined to bring the backpack.
The valet and bellhops were efficient and polite and Gerty was estatic with the grandeur of it all. Fritz went to check in as Gerty wandered off in the lobby. A young bellhop named Jeremy stood at the ready with their bags already carted waiting for a room assignment. Gerty walked close and whispered,
“You like pretty young girls don’t ya? Pretty girls with pretty little bodies. Pretty little breasts and you want to touch them don’t ya? Do you want to touch mine Mr. Bellhop?”
Jeremy was stunned into silence not knowing what to think or say to this guest. He stood his ground as Gerty was virtually nose to nose as she whispered something accusing and inviting. Jeremy he was intimidated by the large man checking in for the girl. Jeremy chose to remain silent and politely ignored the strange girl. He was relieved when the check in went quickly. The man came and ushered the girl to the elevators with Jeremy lagging behind.
Fritz and Gerty rented adjoining rooms on the eleventh floor with beautiful view of the city. Jeremy entered Fritz’s room and placed the bags on counters next to the dressers. Jeremy wanted away from the strange couple and briskly walked to the door.
“Hold it a minute Mr. Bellhop. Where do you think you’re going? “
Gerty’s question stopped Jeremy in his tracks.
“Forgetting something Mr. Bellhop. Don’t you want your tip?”
Gerty walked up uncomfortably close again and took Jeremy’s hand and slowly pressed a twenty in it and closed the hand over the bill.
“See you soon.”
Jeremy backed out of the room and closed the doors behind him with a sigh of relief. Fritz remarked,
“He was an odd kind of a bellhop. Forget the tip? Guess they pay good here.”
Gerty was leaning her back against the closed door. She had the far away look in her eyes again. She whispered,
“Not so odd maybe,”
Gerty paused for a moment and said,
I’m going next door to unpack and then maybe go for a little walk.”
Fritz replied, “I’ll get ready too.”
Gerty turned to Fritz.
“Alone Fritz, I’m going alone.”
