Fritz was a man who felt blessed in his job. His record for employment was not untarnished. His previous bodyguard duties had not always turned out without incident. Incidents usually involved ambulances and hospitalization. With Gerty, apparently the incidents were considered positive job qualifications. The executors of Gerty’s estate and trust funds had to match people to Gerty not some usual standard.

If Gerty did not approve there was no changing her mind. Gerty liked the stoic and rarely spoken Fritz. She could tease, talk endlessly and Fritz would listen without complaint and do whatever was asked. Fritz also waited two years to be back at Gerty’s side when she was eventually released.

Gerty knew Fritz was not a keeper but he also would never become a daddio.
Fritz would rather die than let anything happen to Gerty.

“Miss Gerty may I ask what we will be shopping for at the surplus store?’

“Well Fritzy, I was thinking about a little camping and hiking.”

Fritz showed no surprise and replied,

“Might we better be served at a Cabela’s or something along that line?”

“Can I get backpacks, sleeping bags, hunting knives and maybe a small firearm or two?”

“Most assuredly Miss.”

Fritz didn’t worry about arming Gerty as she was his world now. They both have killed. Gerty gets what Gerty wants. Plain and simple. If people got in the way of that then Fritz would assist in changing their perspective. This would be Gerty’s first visit back into the frenzied world of the human race. Shopping.

Fritz settled on a big box mall outlet named Jerry’s Outdoor World. The parking lot was crowded so Fritz was alert to his surrounding. He tried to keep up with Gerty who shot out of the limo and ran for the entrance doors. Fritz was a man of a certain demeanor and he did not run after anyone. He just hoped Gerty would stop once she spotted all the glorious weapons inside.

Fritz found Gerty standing over the dozens of glistening knives in glass cases next to the handguns. Gerty squealed with delight at all the different styles and special designed hilts.

“Anything catch your eye Miss Gerty?”
“Can I touch them” Gerty asked.

Fritz nodded to the clerk who apparently felt the need to wear a hunting vest while at work. What Fritz called a butterfly knife was the first selection. Gerty clearly planned on loading up a varied supply. The clerk seemed confused about the large purchase but happily scratched the strange black credit card with no insignia. One oversized backpack and a sleeping bag later they were out the door. Fritz explained to Gerty he had just the firearm Gerty needed in the car. There was no need for the licensing drama buying a new firearm could cause.

The nickel plated semi automatic 22 caliber pistol in the limo was perfect. Gerty gave Fritz a hug which Fritz tolerated although Fritz doesn’t hug either.

“Where to next Miss?”
Gerty showed a small smile and an empty stare.

“Hotel for now and then to the east coast to visit a friend.”
