Indie Film #5- Midnight Special in Independent Film-2016

Jeff Nichols has also directed 3 other independent films, two of which i have seen: Mud (starring Matthew McConaughey) and Take Shelter (starring Michael Shannon) and one i have not: Shotgun Stories (also starring Michael Shannon). Both Mud and Take Shelter were quite good.

So, Midnight Special. A young boy with special powers has been whisked away from a religious sect (or cult) by his father and a friend, they are heading to the boy’s mother and eventually to a specific place that has a special meaning that people are unsure about (except the cult thinks they all need to be with the boy to be ‘saved’).

It turns out that the powers this boy has cause him to be able to tap into very secret government information via satellites. As a result, the government is after the trio (soon to be quad) as well as the cult.

Its hard to go any farther without giving out spoilers, so i won’t.

One of my favorite parts of the movie is the cinematography. There are these quiet, longer, still shots where the camera is focused on one image such as the clouds. I loved it. And i highly recommend seeing the movie (its now out in second run theaters, i saw it for $4), i hear people murmur that Jeff Nichols is considered an “up and coming” director, though i’d prefer he stay indie.
