anxious weather in poetry

when it passes by
it passes like rain
worms rising from gravel
as heartache and pain and
after we’ve dried out
with sunshine for days
you start to wonder
when its coming again.
when it passes
it passes like clouds
is it just a test warning
is it thundering loud
plundering what once
made us peaceful and proud
flinch once for the lightning
flinch twice for the sound.
when it passes
it passes like stars
occluded by vapor
and then there they are
ten billion trillion miles away
three billion years in the past
beaming us light in still darkness
even thought just like the sheltering sky
they too shall pass
both are just cumulus
accumulations of gas
warring out there in the night
for control over the things
that remain in fleeting sight.
