Camel Bookmobile/Life of Pi (Books 36 and 37) in Book Challenge 2016 (52 books to be read in 52 weeks)

The Camel Bookmobile by Masha Hamilton (311 pages, including acknowledgements and contact details for book donations in Africa) is the story of Fi, an American woman who finds herself visiting remote nomadic settlements in Kenya with a mobile library. The idea is to promote literacy. The main condition of the library turning up is that people return their books on time, or the library stops turning up. One such community is Madidima, visited once a fortnight. However, one visit turns up the fact that one person won’t return the two books he’s borrowed. So how to get the books back?

This was an interesting read, and the first book I’ve read in a long time that’s set in Africa. I loved the fact that each chapter is from different characters point of view. Definitely worth reading. Date Read: 4-6 May 2016

Life of Pi by Yann Martel (334 pages, including excerpt from Beatrice and Virgil) was sent to me by my mother. It’s the story of Pi, a teenager who is left stranded in the middle of the Pacific with a lifeboat and a series of animals. I loved the first part, which deals with Pi’s childhood and his dabblings with religion. The second part, which dealt with his being stranded in the middle of the ocean, seemed to drag on a bit. Some of the magic was lost.

It was an okay read. Probably 3.5 stars, only because of the weak part two. Date Read: 7-10 May 2016
