We love to say how arbitrary time is, except it really isn’t. A year is one trip around the sun. A month is based on the moon’s orbit. A week is roughly one phase of the moon. A day is revolution of Earth on its axis. And a second? Based on human heartbeat.

I’m just imagining a world with no moon which was tidally locked with its sun. (As in, only one side faced the sun at all times.) They might develop a concept of a “second” if they have a heart, but other longer concepts of time? Maybe there are other ways of breaking up long periods of time, but I imagine they’d be way different than ours.

Food for thought. : )
