Anyone who says that culture, racism, and diversity aren’t hot button issues hasn’t been paying attention. Funny thing is… I have friends who are ALL over the map on this one. I have a friend who is SO “SJW” (in the bad way) that it would not surprise me if she supported violent retribution for “Cultural Appropriation” offenses. Seriously… I think she believes that, if you feel your culture is being appropriated and are a minority, you should have the right to beat up the offender. It scares me. On the other hand, I have friends that believe “My opinion is mine, fuck you!” The kind of people that think they should be able to walk into work in black face and if anyone objects, it is because those people are weak and worthless. I obviously am somewhere in the middle. Because… and it horrifies me how little this is considered… there is a fine line between being considerate, being oppressive, and being an asshole. A white girl wearing beads in her braided hair? That isn’t oppressive or being an asshole, leave her alone. A white girl wearing a “Fuck the N#%&ers” shirt is being oppresive and being an asshole. Call her out.

The fact that this particular issue has become so huge is just… boggling. PEOPLE, play nice! Be good to each other. If someone is offended by something that you think is stupid… you don’t get to belittle their feeling. You CAN ignore it and do as you please. If you are offended by what someone is doing… take the extra second to figure out if they are being malicious or not. If they are being malicious… call them out. If they aren’t being malicious? Figure out if it is really something you want to make a big deal out of. A white kid wearing a Black Panther t-shirt? Before you explode on them… ask yourself, “Is this Black Panther the group or Black Panther the comic book character?”
