Happy Eyes in Everyday Ramblings

Thursday I went to the eye doctor for a check-in to make sure my eye had healed well after Diego scratched it months ago. I had asked the wonderful funny doctor, an associate professor I met then if she could become my eye doctor for like, umm, forever.

For years I have been getting my eyes checked by ophthalmologists at this high-end glasses store in my old neighborhood. They are very good and thorough but it is their business to sell glasses and I have very expensive glasses, transitional trifocals.

The eye doctor school that my employer runs is a 17-minute walk away and the difference between the medical model of eye care and the capitalist model were quite obvious. Anyway, my eyes are good, the scratch healed well enough that it is not visible and I don’t need new glasses as I have perfect vision with the ones I have. They admired the frames. :)

Of course my eyes were dilated and it took hours even with the extra protection plastic shades they offer with the glare for me to feel comfortable being out and about after I got home. Needless to say I didn’t get my daily steps in that day.

So I was determined to make that up the next day. I had an afternoon dental appointment. I am thrilled to say that for the first time in about nine weeks I don’t have any stiches in my mouth! Some of them had been coming loose over the last week and it was annoying.

This freedom will last three weeks and then I have the second procedure of the big three on the other side. No teeth coming out this time (I only have one more I am going to lose in maybe six months) but there will be surgery. Bleh.

My dental specialist, Sikh professor extraordinaire, is quite happy with the healing from the bone grafts. And that makes me happy. I may get to avoid one extra procedure, a sinus lift that I was a little nervous about. Fingers crossed on that.

In the meantime though we are finally going to be able to get away to our semi-annual long weekend at the Oregon Coast coming up this Thursday! I will ache for the cats but need the break. My cat sitter is just back from her own break in Hawaii so that is perfect timing.

And the real reason my eyes are so happy is that it is, under the glare and drizzle, stunningly beautiful out there in all the gardens. Lupines and poppies and early hollyhocks and hydrangeas and the iris, oh, the late beautiful iris, make my blessedly healthy eyes joyful to use.

And I am now at day 8 with no Diet Coke. I am putting on a little weight but I hope to nip that trend in the bud as soon as my body adjusts.

It takes longer, as we all are learning, the older we are.

And go me, I did catch up on my steps on Friday.
