I keep meaning to write in here and then can’t manage to find the time to do much besides read a few of my favorites’ entries. But the baby is sleeping still and the kids woke me up so early there’s still an hour before I have to take Cody to the bus stop so I should be able to write now without any interruptions.
Summer is 6 weeks today! She’s what some people call an “easy baby” which is such a relief since she’s my 3rd. She usually only cries when she wants to be fed or needs a bit of help with a burp or falling asleep. She has been sleeping so well at night since she was 3 days old that she usually only wakes me up once a night for a feeding, sometimes not at all if we go to bed late (like when I finally get her to bed at midnight, she wakes me at around 7am for a feeding). It’s wonderful! 6-8 hour stretches of sleep at night are amazing for a baby this age!! The boys were waking me at least 4 times a night at this age and I remember being a zombie. With Cody I just ended up napping a ton when he napped a ton, so that helped, but with Miles, I had Cody to watch so I was just exhausted all the time.
Breastfeeding was a bit rocky at the beginning this time, which is normal for me. She was latching improperly sometimes and so I was super sore but I was just gritting my teeth and getting through it. Eventually I called my doctor and asked for a prescription for Jack Newman’s nipple ointment which everyone says is amazing and works pretty fast. It made all the difference! I feel much better now. It’s so nice when you don’t have to cringe every time you feed your baby. And she had a week where she wasn’t latching onto one of my boobs properly but thank goodness that’s over!
Summer still sleeps a lot during the day at 6 weeks old. Sometimes when she falls asleep on me I hold her and other times I transfer her to a portable baby chair I have and tuck her in with a blanket and she sleeps for hours. She has been nursing a ton in the evening lately which is likely due to a growth spurt. At her 1 month doctor appointment she was 9lbs 4.5oz, up from the 7lbs 6oz she dropped to shortly after she was born. And she’s gone from 18 to 20 inches. She started out wayyyy too small for even her newborn clothes but now she is at the point where she is fitting nicely into the smallest ones. I’m glad she’s not growing too quickly, especially since she’s my last baby!
I’m still waiting for lots of smiles which should be coming any time now. She has this certain happy expression she gets sometimes and we’ve seen a few little smiles here and there but nothing too consistent. She’s a sweet baby though and loves to look at everyones faces, unless they’re getting too close (like her brothers) and she loves snuggling with Mommy. I’m really enjoying the newborn stage this time around, especially since she sleeps so well at night and isn’t even too fussy in the evenings when a lot of babies are at this age. Summer loves being in the baby carrier (I have an ergo) and going for walks and she absolutely HATES the car seat. As in lots of screaming lol. But all my kids were like that for a while....so what can you do?
The boys are doing great with Summer being around. I haven’t noticed any jealousy at all. They’re just curious and want to say hi to her or see what she’s up to, which is such a relief. I was worried Miles was going to be super jealous. They both love to hold her sometimes but in minutes they’re saying she’s “too heavy” and handing her back lol.
My c section healing was not fun as usual and I was feeling a bit down about how rough I still felt at the 2 week mark but now I would say I feel about 95% healed now at 6 weeks and it’s such a relief that that is over with. It was tough when it would be a really beautiful day out and I didn’t feel up to going for a walk yet. Being cooped up at home is not fun! But now I’m fine and things are going great! I’ve been pumping occasionally and giving Summer a bottle if we need to be out somewhere and she’s taking it really well. I know I will have to nurse outside at times this summer when we are on day trips but I find that hard to do sometimes and awkward so I try not to do it so far if I don’t have to.
I will finish this with some pictures....I love dressing Summer up!! It’s so fun to dress a little girl :) She was 1 month in the picture with the little black dress, a little older in the picture with the boys and the last picture I took yesterday.
