position in poetry

how you position the profile picture
on your social networking whatevers
the picture you happen to put there
it fascinates the hell out of me
how sometimes they’ll put themselves
how sometimes they’ll put their kid
how sometimes it will be him and his lover
how sometimes it will be her and her mother
sometimes just his pet
sometimes the person with her pet
then even more fascinating
when we get to the context

your photo’s with your lover
your lover’s photo is alone
one looks professionally done
one like a selfie on a phone
I’m not saying you’re clingy
I’m not saying they need to atone
but there’s a story in the difference
in the friction of what’s shown
what do the presences
what do the absences mean?
did you make it this way on purposes
did your sub-consciousnesses set the scene?
you’re with your best friend
she’s not with you
she stands alone in her profile
her husband is with their daughter of two

I find myself reflexively
accidentally fleetingly obsessed
with the presence and the absence
accidentally on purpose
in the context
of different people’s
online footprints
what does it mean about them
what does it mean about me?
