survivor in poetry

never going to find happiness being respectable
what seems upstanding is often deeply detestable
certainly not going to change the world that way
the only way you can consistently conform to
others’ expectations is to be cold and dead
so you just gotta try to be alive instead

have to have your confidence come from within
but it’s harder to do when negativity comes
from all directions external urging you to
give up on happiness and be respectable
down your throat to get inside your head
you just gotta try to be alive instead
