the liquid zoo in poetry

I’m sick of all the mystics and statistics
sometimes their predictions manage to agree
the rare times when that happens I am shaken
I have been known to fall down on my knees

I had my second-hand fill of
those conjoined twin sisters
fortune and shame
success in its process defeats us
the stars can’t take all of the blame
the structure that makes you is rigged
they have to make you petty and small
if you want to make it big
the flaws, dear Brutus, are epidemic
the fault in the stars is systemic

when you self-select for strivers
that’s what you’re gonna get
those who want to win for the sake of winning
the mystic statistical game
of fortune and shame
