I’ve made it to Sydney!
I checked into my hostel and was stunned to find the room packed! At like 4pm. I guess they must all be jetlagged foreign tourists?
Apparently I have to change rooms after 2 nights, for whatever reason. Whatever. I’m sure I can do that. I got my membership card (because it was cheaper to book with a membership than not) so now I get an extra 10% off worldwide for the next two years. Could come in handy I guess.
I wasn’t even sure which bunk was mine. It’s such a mess in there. One bed was all messed up on the bottom bunk, and there was a clean top bunk but it had a piece of paper and clean sheets folded on it, so I just took the bottom bunk and swapped the ratty-looking doona over from that top bunk because it had two.
So I really have no idea if I’ve just stolen some poor bastard’s bed or not. Guess I’ll find out when I get back tonight. As long as one is free I don’t really care.
Everyone in there was eeeily quiet. Such a contrast to the gay one in Berlin. Man I miss that.
I booked the Mardi Gras package here, but I doubt anyone else in that room is gay. I really didn’t get that vibe. Maybe that’s why I have to change rooms on Thursday?
And this backpackers has a pool and a sauna!! I mustn’t have even realised that last time I stayed there! Or maybe it’s new? I was probably just oblivious.
I’d love to have my own room in a cheap hotel, but the words ‘cheap hotel’ don’t exist over Mardi Gras in Sydney. I’d be looking at at least $1400 for the week.
So, I’ll rough it. I have before.
I’m at the gym typing this while cycling, something I used to do a lot but haven’t in a while.
I found out they’ve just opened a new branch of my gym in Surry Hills (or ‘Slurry Hills’ ad the Syd-gays like to call it), but I went there and they didn’t have lockers, the roof was really low in parts and it still had that new-paint smell.
Not really appealing when I’m gasping for breath after 5 minutes on the stair-climb machine, which was a machine I haven’t ever seen or used before, so that was something.
I ended up having some dinner and going to the other nearby gym in the city, where I am currently. They have lockers but the way they are designed, my lock won’t fit them doh! I’m glad I brought two blocks with. The other is being used back at the backpackers. I’ll just have to swap them over I think.
The flight down wasn’t that pleasant. I thought I was going to throw up on the take off, but I think that’s because I’d only had toast and a coffee for breakfast. I’d run out of milk and didn’t wanna buy more if I’m gonna be away for a week. So I went without my cereal.
Because it’s an el-cheapo airline, they were doing stringent bag-checks for weight etc. A lady sitting near me informed me this but I’d arrived late and they must’ve stopped doing it. I knew my bag was 6.8kg from checking it on the scales at home (I always do) but I had my shoulder tote as well, which may have put me over the combined 7kg limit.
It’s such a stupid, pathetic money-grubbing rule. It used to be a 10kg combined limit, but a few years back they dropped it.
I couldn’t help but notice a few obese people waiting in the terminal. Do they charge them extra? Yeah, I don’t think so.
Anyway, I just played it cool and walked on, bags in tow, unchecked. They didn’t ask me. Phew. Now just gotta get back home next week. Will see how I go.
Although from previous experiences, it’s just my hometown that seem to be assholes about it because they don’t have anything better to do.
In Sydney, they actually have a life, I suppose.
Today’s pretty much been spent travelling/commuting etc. I’m just relaxing. Tomorrow I think I’ll go to one of the beaches and maybe return to that nice bakery that entrusted me to pay them back for a meal last time.
I don’t forget nice gestures like that.
Let the festivities begin. I didn’t bring my laptop this time so photos will just be on my Instagram until I get home
