the land of enchantment in poetry

all the used bookstores in Phoenix
there’s no way to rise above the dross
the hidden gold in El Dorado
don’t mean shit if it’s lost
all these poplar-tree-lined streets
sun-drenched cities of dreams
can’t bring back old friends
no matter the green-paper cost
you yourself are willing to spend
for a piece of the past actions
not even the littlest slices
not even insignificant fractions
can make the past resurrect
not with folding money
not even with sex
anything like it’s a figment
at best a frozen monument
no rewind can be heaven-sent
so just live here or be nowhere
build something livable and new
if that’s even something
you still know how to do
