Dad’s Army steps forward …. in The odd entries from life …….

I’ve been out tonight with my Daughter, she wanted to see the new ‘Dad’s Army’ I had my doubts about a new cinema film of this classic BBC television series from the 1960’s, I think it has been repeated every year on BBC and of late on some of our free to air channels, there are people watching Dad’s Army who not bourn when Dad’s Army went the series finished in the 70’s.

Of the television cast only two remain, Frank Williams appears again as The Reverend Timothy Farthing, he is now 84. Ian Lavender is the other survivor, he was Private Pike, he is now 69 and appears as Brigadier Pritchard.

The cast for the film is a mix of British’s best-aged actor’s, Bill Nighy as Sergeant Wilson, Tom Courtenay as Lance Corporal Jones, Michael Gambon as Godfrey, Bill Paterson as Frazer and Toby Jones [not so aged] as Captain Mainwaring; quite a cast! There are some names we see often and a few I remember, Sarah Lancaster [Coronation Street and others] Annette Crosbie [One Foot in the Grave] Julia Foster [Half A Sixpence] and Mark Gatiss [Actor, screenwriter, television producer, comedian, novelist, director and Doctor Who fan, he wrote the script for ‘An Adventure in Space and Time’ a drama about the first years of Doctor Who.]

I found the film much better than I expected, the comedy was lower than the television Dad’s Army, non of the original creatures’ are not quiet the same, not a follow-on more a ‘to one side’ I enjoyed it, this films successes stands out against other this type of film; like the American Doctor Who film wasn’t a follow-on; just an odd stand alone!
