Around the late 90s/early 00s, Sydney was party central within Australia - I remember that for the New Year's Millennium there was no realistic option other than to party in Sydney. The drunkenness and violence around some areas of the city were getting band, but what's happened in the past ten years is a gross overreaction. By contrast, Melbourne is actually making it easier to stay around in the CBD late at night. The North Melbourne area is always buzzing at night, pubs open everywhere and bands playing at every second venue. However, if it ends up getting more extensive to live in the inner city and a bunch of evangelicals get in control of local regulations, the same thing that's happened in Sydney will happen in Melbourne.
