Still Handsome in the Deep Freeze in Everyday Ramblings

Finally a picture of Carlo that does his good looks justice! We are spending a lot of time together, the cats and me, because after we had gorgeous relaxing snow day on Sunday, no surprise, we had ice develop. Yesterday was pretty awful. Today is better but it depends on one’s elevation and micro-temperature. Up here where I am, things are still slippery.

The temperature is hovering right at freezing, which means it isn’t really melting, it just becomes slushy and then freezes over. As a person without a car this is my absolute worst weather nightmare. Yesterday I used my overshoe cleats and trek poles to get to the little store a few blocks away. It was not my idea of a good time but I managed to stay upright. A lot of folks are slipping and falling.

This morning I made it down to the office and back for a meeting but it was not fun.

This afternoon I will be doing the same, even if I do look like a dork, I will be an upright dork. I’d rather not be going out at all but that just isn’t practical. They closed the church all day yesterday and all the activities were cancelled including my class. Our office was closed too, but I still had to work.

That is the first time I have been unable to teach for a year and it was weird. I had worked hard to prep for this New Year class and I admit to being just slightly grumpy in the evening. Having sore abs was a component part of all that.

My solution? Eat chocolate and go to bed early.

Oh and I listened to a podcast about the huge refugee camp in Northern Kenya called Dadaab. I have absolutely nothing to complain about! The U.N. keeps cutting back on the food rations there and people go hungry and sell their food so they can have phones and maybe a little sugar now and then.

I feel like a princess.

But still…my distress at the weather is valid.

There was some rearranging of my dental appointments that start Friday this week.

I do know that what they are going to do on Friday afternoon will hurt so I plan to have a quiet weekend close to home.

I hope I will be able to fully provision for this as they are saying the cruddy just at freezing wet weather is going to be in play for at least a week.

Yesterday afternoon I watched the first episode of the last season of Downton Abbey. I found it kind of depressing. I’ll stick it through because I love the clothes and the sets but…

What I am enjoying immensely is the book by Mary Norris, Between You & Me: Confessions of a Comma Queen. She is a copy editor and proofreader at The New Yorker. Of course reading it makes me totally insecure as a writer but it also makes me howl with laughter. And that is a good thing. :)

Put in a good word for a quicker thaw will ya? In the meantime the cats and me will carry on. (Diego is currently curled up between a pair of sweat pants (mine) and the hot water bottle, while Carlo is out watching live house sparrow T.V. on the heated cat bed.
