winterize in poetry

they salted the roads to hell and back yesterday
to collect New Years holiday double-time pay
if you roll a pretzel on the New York Thruway
you could bring it up full ballgame delicious
the roads are sandy and white with expectation
the roads are sandy and white with exploitation
the roads are sandy and white soaked with de-icer
waiting for the next storm to come make it count
when you work the roads and winter comes late
you have to salt away what you can salt away
overtime to cover the credit cards from last week
cars corrode from the sodium chloride overload
undercarriages rust through to eventually explode
but we do what we do for our pay today and today
tomorrow’s never coming that’s how it will stay
it’ll catch up with us still somehow some way
they salted the roads to hell and back yesterday
it seemed like a good idea at the time but then
all ideas seem good at the time
that’s how they get us
