For those of you who have proper winters we must seem like such wimps here but it was cold last night at midnight for the First Run 5K! With a wind that on the Beaufort Wind Scale comes in at a 5, a Fresh Breeze (oh it was fresh alright) between 29 & 38 km/hr or … Small trees sway. White crested wavelets (whitecaps) form, some spray…

(Apparently Beaufort was a poet)

We began to notice it slacking off as we got about 2/3rds of the way around the river and such a gift it was. It was clear and you could see the stars and the big yellow half moon rise in the east. A beautiful beautiful night.

F. and I each spent the last few hours of the year at home warming up and waiting for the phone to ring and one or the other of us to call and say, no, no way it is too cold… The marvelous S. was fully vested though as she had walked downtown earlier in the day to pick up our race packets. If it had been each of us on our own I think all three of us would have bailed but together we did it!

F. turns 80 in July.

Without being particularly spiritual she is very of and in the moment and open to new experience and as both her and S. are retired nurses, full of a wondrous kind of practical compassion. They gave their hand warmers to the fellow standing in the waning wind guiding the flow of the runners (and walkers like us) at the end of the bridge near the finish line.

I was tired and a little groggy, as I had worked a nine-hour day that began at 6 AM but I enjoyed it and it set this marvelous social tone to the New Year. The only thing I regretted was not having any festive bling. It never even occurred to me as I have been so wrapped up in work, my health and yoga and winding down my teaching schedule.

The Tarot card I pulled for 2016 is Two of Swords…In my deck…Two armor–clad knights are deadlocked in combat. Their armor glints in the sunlight. The visors on their helmets protect their eyes, but give restricted visibility. The plume on the helmet of the knight in the foreground is stirred by the wind, and his yellow cloak billows, signifying the ruling element of air. And in the divinatory meaning, the good bits are… Balanced force, Harmony. Affection. Friendship.

Sweet! I felt all those things last night. Much better than Vain Regret (Five of Cups) I pulled last year.

Tomorrow morning I have my Christmas gift massage and I think Kes and Most Honorable are coming up for a casual dinner out. The cats are excited. They love Kes and Most Honorable. (Well, they are as excited as two cats with an annoyingly disturbed sleep pattern because Mom was roaming around town like some sort of pack animal in the middle of the night, and are sleeping it off, can get.)

Hope your New Year’s holiday was and or is relaxed and cheerful and no matter what is going on with your weather you are comfortable and content.

Me thinks we have our work cut out for us all in terms of Climate Change. The more things stay the same, the more they change… As long as we reach out to each other there is hope we can make this work and muddle through.

I am going to hold that thought.
