On how Climate Change causes Terrorism. in Whey and Sonic Screwdrivers.

The right has criticized Bernie for his assertion that climate change is linked to terrorism. I thought it was a little odd, at first, too, until I watched a follow-up interview.

Then I realized he’s using flowery language to talk about something far darker than most realize.

Consider the climate zones of the world. What happens if the world gets warmer? On a long-enough timeline, the equator will become uninhabitable, and Canada might end up looking a bit like the US’s climate now. This doesn’t happen overnight. It’s gradual.

What are the people in those damned zones to do? Go somewhere else. They’re going to migrate away from the equator.

I love the Bern, but I wish he was more articulate about some of his points. He’s mentioned water as a natural resource. This is a very very vague reference to how water will become scarce closer to the equator as global temperatures continue to rise. Water is more valuable than oil. Concurrently, I wish he had mentioned some kind of oil-independence, as it IS possible with modern technology. With the land we have, between wind and solar power, we wouldn’t need oil for electricity. We know damned well the corporate donors of the Republican party would never allow this.

Consider. Whether by civil war or lack of natural resources, you’re displaced. You’re in a land that isn’t friendly to you. In fact, they view you as some sort of natural enemy. You’ve done nothing wrong, you’re just trying to exist. Existing means access to food and water, which is a premium. And then some rebellion group offers you a gun and says, “Let’s get these assholes.”

On a long-term scale, that is how climate change causes terrorism. Bernie isn’t 100% right, but he has a point. Because if you thought Paris was something, you’re in for some shit if the world continues to get warmer. There are strikes all over the middle east on a regular basis that don’t show up on the radar.

We need two things: energy independence and to hold true to whatever principles we have. Except for those First Nation homies, we’re a nation of immigrants. Our forebears came to this country looking for a better place. We toss around this idea of personal freedom. As much as this country was based on religious freedom, just how is it christian for the right to not help our neighbors? If we aren’t true to our principles, then what the fuck are we fighting for?
