So, I have time on Guy Fawkes Day to write something more substantial. It seems that Halloween has really taken over from Guy Fawkes - no doubt because the concept of burning a Catholic effigy on a bonfire for something that happened in 1605 is not very profitable or indeed ethical for businesses. Halloween gets the tills tingling before you start on Christmas.
Anyway, in the old days kids did not trick or treat but sat around in the street asking people for a ‘Penny for the Guy’ - normally a rather manky straw thing in old clothes. The key thing was the bonfire and the fireworks - which my dad looked after.
Anyway - it is likely to be pissing down tonight!
And now for mortality. I was in a charity second hand bookshop in the city yesterday and found I book I already had - looked inside to see what they wanted for it, and found it belonged to an old colleague who dies a couple of months ago. He was single and spent a lot on books and dvds - when he retired he made his garage into a book store - and then he died suddenly - and they had to dispose of his books. So a large number were given to the bookshop. In fact it seems one whole table was made up of his books. The same thing had happened a couple of years ago when another, younger colleague died and I recognised a lot of his books in the shop.
I have spent many years building a collection of books, mainly from second hand bookshops - some now rare - but what will happen to them when I pop my clogs?
Will the kids being a skip in and load them into it? Maybe I should donate them to the bookshop now and relieve SW… from the fear that on day they will all fall on her. But they are my friends!!!! Ah mortality!!!!
An old pic this is about one sixth of my books -
and when finding that on Photofucket I found a load of old cock
