These songs cracked me up, a long time ago. I got to see the Austin Lounge Lizards, I want to say at the old Starry Night. The Starry Night was a nightclub in Portland that booked national acts in an intimate setting. It was in a part of town that’s confusing to people not from Portland (which includes most of the world). It’s called old town or china town depending on who and what part of day you are talking to someone. Oregonians in general give directions so bad that you’d think it was on purpose, Portlanders are worse.
There’s a gate now with Fu-Fu dragons to mark … Old town. I don’t know, I saw the Lounge lizards in an intimate setting in Portland and Starry Night sounds like where I’d go and where they’d be booked, but I honestly don’t remember. The cover was cheap and the beer wasn’t marked up too much.
If history recalls them at all it’ll probably be as a novelty band, but Christ-a-mighty they were good. I don’t know, maybe they still are, maybe they don’t leave Austin these days. It takes both testicular fortitude and wackiness beyond the pale to do a bluegrass version of brain damage.
They other one cracks me up because they covered it at a time when the song and Snoop Dogg was getting serious play. Not to sound … um, nebbishe (put that in your crack pipe and smoke it) — but the bluegrass version is the first time I understood the words. I mean in a row.
I miss the Starry Night. It’s been gone for a very long time now. Sunny used to go on about the old owner and personal stories that, honestly, I couldn’t have cared more than not at all. I could’ve I guess, didn’t wanna. It’s like knowing Bob Dylan beat his wife, didn’t affect his music, and, you know, if I was over at dinner and he tried that I’d pop him in the nose and bring it up a size, but I wouldn’t mess with guitar hands. He never has me over for dinner anymore. Maybe he should have done time for that, I would have been ok with him doing time. Michael Vicks was a good ball player, he got popped for dog fighting; pits. I think of that as at least as abhorrent as wife beating. He did time, not enough, but enough to fuck up his career. It’s our justice system, whether it sucks or not it’s what we use to deal with abhorrence.
Shit. Sorry. Here’s some songs.

Michael Vick is a criminal scumbag and should still be doing time IMO . I like the name " Starry Night "!
