postcard from a sunbeam in poetry

we’re these tangles of
identities and
needs for a reason
to teach us
we’re all each
a little different
we’re all kind of freaks
but some never get the memo
they push the difference
in a deep hole and they keep
chasing that myth we
call normal

what makes you strange
isn’t a mess it
doesn’t make you less it’s
not a weakness it’s
a hard path to growing
a method of showing
it’s a kind of lesson
that we are all variations
there’s no such thing
as normal

but some people don’t accept it
so they form businesses and
churches and political parties
to help them reject it
some of them wake up, though
after the election
no longer ashamed of what gives
them erections or a reason
to get through this long night
deal with the fact
there’s no one kind of right
we’re just dust motes in light
with situational ethics and
all kind of ethnics and
fetishes hobbies and morals
all trying to tell us
there’s nothing that’s normal

which is pretty cool
