Looks like things are back to normal here - the autumn brings Strictly Come Dancing (SCD) which had its first show last night when the ‘celebs’ were linked to their ‘pros’. They were all very jolly and enthusiastic - but the real stuff gets going in three weeks.
Meanwhile the BBC starts another dramatisation of Lady Chatterley’s Lover tonight - a book which was banned until 1959 because of its language, and also the possibility that the lower classes would be led astray by contemplating a working man shagging a lady of the upper classes. The word did not fall apart when it was published - and the use of the word ‘fuck’ became acceptable in literature, although used for many years by the working classes in circumstances far removed from love. Lawrence’s book is full of romantic stuff - as well as descriptions of the the gamekeeper’s ‘John Thomas’ in an erect state, circled by spring flowers. I wonder if we will see a glimpse of a JT tonight.

Meanwhile - a few more thoughts about the cruise. Until you are on it you have no idea of the size of the St Lawrence River - and this shows how far we went down - to Quebec City and Montreal.

This is the first view of Quebec City with the Heights of Abraham on the left, where Wolfe died, and Britain secured the territory from the French. It turned into a lovely day - and we loved QC.

Montreal was very different - a modern, bustling metropolis - but we were greeted by a fireboat

and it has the most amazing RC Basilica - just over the top!!!!

and we stayed overnight - having a party on the deck

I love Montreal I had the most incredible new year there ten years ago.

I read the guardian review of lady chatterly's lover. apparently it was dead clever and not at all rude. Might check it out on iplayer.

Wonderful art galleries there. I must comment on LCL - I thought it was an intelligent adaptation in 90 minutes - not a private part in sight (I looked hard) - but excellent acting.
