Hot Town in Everyday Ramblings

Our dahlias aren’t doing so well this year here in my neighborhood but in other places they are thriving. This over-bright shot pretty much suits the glare filled humid hot town late summer in the city vibe out there.
In spite of the fact that I was very much looking forward to my public class last night, (it is the best part of the week for me) because I had cool new variations on simple movements we have done before for the front of the shoulders, all the muscles around our collar bones I spaced one sequence completely (my students offered to get my glasses for me) and one of them got nauseous (this happens occasionally due to a multiplicity of factors) and two had to leave early and one who promised he was coming wasn’t able to make it and by the end of the class I only had three students left and they were all on one side of the room and if we had been a ship we would have listed that way…
And then when one of my brave and hardy remaining students and I walked out front to her car after class this blitzed young pregnant woman came by and asked us for money and laughed and said, “Why not be honest, it is for drugs and I’ll have to turn tricks tonight…” and my heart just ached for her.
There were a lot of folks out in the humid evening, and this particular street I walk down on the upper edge of downtown is full of mixed housing, much of it low income. There was this slight edge of explosive menace that one can totally understand based on the news and the activism the Black Lives Matter movement is engendering.
Then a few blocks down there was this drama filled scene with four people that literally looked like they had crawled out from under a rock, they were filthy. They were having a car crisis, a beat up broken down possibly once on fire car crisis that involved all this junk from the trunk on the street and yelling and berating and the occasional laugh.
It was the kind of night a body wants to come home to a fan cooled home with a sweetie with kind words and a cold drink and maybe some lentils and nan.
Every once in a while I miss Mr. Finch so much it hurts.
I need to take the risk and try to find someone else. That will certainly keep me busy and out of trouble.
Yesterday I walked up the hill at lunchtime and I took a wooded shortcut and it was covered, just covered in dry maple leaves. I have noticed that this year in particular folks seem very resistant to the turn towards fall…
The poem I put up a few days ago was finished so I could go to the local poetry reading on Sunday night but in the end I bailed. I’ll go next month as I am having dinner beforehand with my beloved poetry friends at a local restaurant I have never been to before. I hope to have the third installment of that piece done by then.
I sure haven’t been writing much the last three years other than here and on 750 Words.
It is being an interesting exercise in understanding what it is I want to look at all this work/life balance stuff. The questions and the questing continue.
