Perhaps I should clarify some of my comments about our cruise. I never show too much enthusiasm - that way you rarely get too disappointed. In fact I am now looking forward to going since everything is ready - we have checked things more than once. The real hassle is deciding what clothes I am going to take - and SW… will no doubt make a decision in the end.
I have even looked up the Art Galleries in Montreal and Quebec City - and how to get to them - this kind of planning is almost unknown for me!!! Actually it is partly because while we have the broadband connection at home I can do things easily - buying time on the ship is expensive and not for surfing - more to send some e mails and FB stuff which we have already prepared. Anyway I suspect Greenland my not be easy to communicate from.
Meanwhile the hubris shown by some commentators on England beating Australia in the first cricket test has been shown to be misplaced - ‘twas ever thus - Australia, having scored 550 runs should finish it off in plenty of time.
And I bet Rory McIlroy is secretly pleased he sustained an ankle injury which kept him away from the Open golf - wind and rain have led to suspension of play - and it looks like chaos - welcome to a traditional Scottish summer!!!
And Andy Murray seems to be trying to play all the matches against France in the Davis Cup to get GB through
Culture!! The BBC Proms started last night - we shall miss much of them but there was a great televised concert with a Mozart piano concerto and Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast. I wonder if those wanting to destroy the BBC are aware of this major contribution to national and international culture - can you see a commercial company putting this on!!!! And it is not just for the ‘high-brows’. Many councils have cut their funding to the arts as being peripheral to their real needs - it does not bode well.
And as for the Sun publishing a picture of Princess Elizabeth making a Nazi salute on film in 1933 when she was six - with the argument it showed the opinion of the Prince of Wales - later Edward VIII - towards Hitler. Well, is this news? Not at all.
The context of the home made movie is not discussed - no one knew the effect of Hitler coming to power in that year - and it continues the obsession with Hitler which has plagued British culture since 1945.
This is one aspect of the commercial media (Murdoch branch) which gave us phone hacking - and offers nothing of value to society. God help us!!
