My mom rocked & rocked my little girl, gave her a bath & a bottle, snuggled her in warm pajamas, sang her sweet songs, kissed her soft cheeks, rubbed her smooth back and still, still my little girl wasn’t quite able to give in & fall asleep. I come home from work finally, I wrap her in my arms, she nuzzles in tightly, rooting & hungry for so much more than food & she nurses. Only a few swallows, only a few minutes…and she’s asleep. This, my friends, is why I pump when I’m away, why I haul that awful heavy bag, why I sacrifice work hours & lunch times & any downtime between tasks…this is why I know despite all the struggles & the challenges & the barriers & the frustration, it is worth it. Right there, in those calm & peaceful moments in her quiet, dim nursery, when I’m able to comfort my little girl with my body & my smell & my presence, I know it’s all been worth it. Every sideways glance, every snide comment, every meeting missed, every sacrifice made…I’d breastfeed again, no question, no regret, because she, and those moments, are worth it.
