History A Little... in meh...

When I was going to classes, I had to ride the train/MetroLink/light rail to get to school. I would think about taking pictures along the way. Many train tracks and behind the scenes of buildings and manufacturers. It made me think of the history of my town.

St. Louis started as an industrial hub of sorts. A lot of this cities history is still intact. We have buildings that are still around and some still in use, open for tours. Some of the architecture in this city is amazing. I was just reading an article and found there was once a bath house downtown.

I have a hobby where I read about old locations to see if they are still around and try to locate them on google maps. I have a really old book that belonged to either my grandmother or grandfather, or it may have been a school book of one of the siblings or my mom. I had exact addresses for schools that are either still standing, open or were there. You can tell in some instances that schools and buildings were in some places, while other things have changed like street names and how far they travel before they are cut off.

Many churches date back to the 1800’s. Neighborhoods, homes…and I see the beauty in it. I see the beauty in history. I would love to like tour through old buildings, but I’m scared there will be mice and rats. I hate mice and rats. ::shivers just thinking about’em::

I’m envious of those pictures that I see when people break into abandonded buildings and take pictures. I’d always been interested in history, curious about old buildings, just knowing the history of anything is always a wonderful thing. I fell in love with this thing while fumbling around the internet and I found a few websites abour the history of the neighborhoods of the city of St. Louis. Then I stumbled across another website called Ecology of Abscence, showcasing and if he can give history about it, abandond buildings around town. There is a guy who is buying up properties in a section of town called Old North St. Louis, well he was at least. He’d been letting them just crumble and fall. There really hasn’t been much development either. No one wants to buy the Pruitt-Igoe area because of the concrete slab that served as part of the housing complex there. There were rumors of a natural history museum that would go there. I would love that, but I haven’t heard anymore mumblings. I say build on top of that and make that a park or some kind of habitat. Do bird watching and sight seeing. It’s already fenced off and you can’t get in there for real and it’s nothing but trees and tall grass. But that’s just me. Down the street from there is James Clemons’ house. He was uncle to Mark Twain. From what I read there was no real evidence that Samuel Clemons ever visited. There is a chapel built next to the house. To have seen it in its heyday. The house is condemned as well as the church. It was used as a homeless shelter for a while. It was proposed that it be some type of public garden area using some of the basic parts of that house that’s already standing there.

That’s one thing wrong with this city. There is so much potential to do and make things better, but no one really wants to. If they don’t see a bigger picture then what’s the point? Dah well…Not my crusade right?

There’s more to me than just a pretty face I’m not showing.
::tee hee::

Kindest regards,
Sister
