Both literally and figuratively. Detective Carlo D. Cat is draped over my roomy work laptop bag in the hopes of identifying the person most likely to feed him next by thwarting my anticipated departure.
It didn’t work… but it was a valiant effort.
It has cooled down considerably and although hazy it is much more manageable outside. I am continuing to work on my local history project whatever that is. Probably a mix of photography and poetry.
I finished my course of antibiotics and am very happy about that.
Tomorrow I work at home and then am off for a week. I am also happy about that.
I’ve been asked to sub my favorite studio class for almost six weeks in September and October as the regular teacher has her baby and stays home with her. Nimrod (who likes to see himself as the beneficent King) approved this.
Maybe I wasn’t as disappointed in Broadchurch Season 2 as many people have been because I am attached to the actress that plays Gwen in Torchwood and Claire in Broadchurch. And I have great admiration for Charlotte Rampling. It is so wonderful to see a series with so many strong interesting female characters. It compensates for the fact that I sometimes could not understand exactly what David Tennant was saying in his native accent.
Anyway, I finished watching it last night and then went for a walk. I was in an odd melancholy mood even though it was still quite lovely out and I was trying to avoid contact with anyone right then so I walked a block over from where I usually go when I am out wandering.
And I walked by an older house that I am sure has a story to tell, in poor repair, (It has an unusual window in the upstairs front with a couple of blue birds in stained glass that I have taken pictures of before) and I noticed one of those the occupants are away real estate locks on the front door and the garage was boarded up.
The flank side of the house faces the busy street and as I walked that way I saw there had been a terrible fire in the back upper part. The unfenced back yard flows from that and a solitary swing hangs from the large tree back there with the plank seat covered in moss. It was a remarkably forlorn sight and as I was just out briefly
I hadn’t brought my phone or the camera.
I went back today at noon and took pictures but they don’t come near evoking the visceral way I felt the passage of time and the inevitability of change as is the moment of apprehension coming upon it all unexpectedly like that.
Clearly an older person or persons of limited means lived there. The fire was a month ago during the day. Someone left a space heater on in a room full of stuff. They had to tear part of the roof off to put the fire out. No one was hurt but also no one lives there now. My guess will be they will take what is left down.
Layer upon layer we lay down our lives and then one day everything changes.
I try not to take what I have for granted.
And Carlo tries hard to keep me firmly and determinedly planted at home looking out for his brother and him and looking after their every whim.
It is pretty clear who is in charge here.
