Barbuda in In the Kingdom of Suzu

Barbuda is very similar to Anegada in that there are no big chain resorts, there are miles of beaches with no people, small settlement and donkeys roaming wild. It is different from Anegada in that it is a bit bigger and the population is about 1500 as opposed to Anegada’s 200 permanent residents and in addition to the donkeys, there are goats, horses and cattle that roam free and look healthy. They roam free and know to go home at night but on Anegada, the donkeys and cows are just wild and they look skeletal. On Barbuda, even the wild donkeys do not look skeletal. Oh, they also use EC as currency but gladly take American money and Anegada’s currency is US which I find strange as both are parliaments under Great Britain.

Barbuda also has more food choices in that there are wild boars, deer that can be hunted in addition to fish and lobster. On Anegada there are goats, but I do not know of any place where you can get goat meat.

Anegada also benefits from yatchers sailing in, while I think it is harder to sail to Barbuda. On the other hand, Barbuda has people who sell street food which is very good and cheap but only a very few restaurants which close after the season ends in April and Anegada, while the season sends in April, the few restaurants stay open a bit longer. All in all, it is a close tie and Barbuda is winning right now for the following reasons: a) place to stay beachside, our cottages on Anegada fell into the water and nothing has come close to replacing it and b) more activities and food choices. On barbuda, you can hike to see ruins and have the option of eating goat, deer and boar meat, which are very tasty and do not taste like chicken! and the direct flight. To Antigua and then Barbuda a reasonable time of day and cost. Our friends checked into going to Anegada and it is now almost double the fare plus longer the amount of time to get there–not good.

Most likely we will be going back to Barbuda, maybe not next year, but the year after which is ok by me. We originally started going every other year and then got greedy and went every year to Anegada, but there are other places I would like to see and with retirement coming soon, want to be prudent.

Jeff, and my cousin have been wanting to go to “the shacks” in Mississippi—something to do with blues music, not sure what my friend and I would do, but it would be different. I would also like to take jeff to oak island in Nova Scotia as that is where captain kidd supposedly buried his treasure and my maiden name was Kidd.

Oak island is also called “the money pit” and it certainly is. I have been there twice, the first time, we could go on the island and there was digging, the next time, you could go on the island, but everything was shut down. It was still neat going there and I would like to take jeff there sometime, as well as show him Peggy’s cove, the titanic sunk very near there, altho my aunt and uncle have cruised there and say it has become very touristy.

So there you have it, Anegada and Barbuda and how we happened to go there. They both had the three “Bs”.
