Alternate Title: Comic Book Question

I’m about to “go dark” for a while soon. I’ve got a long week of job searching, officially becoming a lawyer, all that jazz. But I’ve thought a lot about what to do… for fun and with this space… when I return. Obviously (because it’s me) I’ll still be here complaining, writing political essays and all of that good stuff. But I wanted to do something fun… something that involved my love of comic books. Especially since I can’t still collect… haven’t in a few years… because it gets expensive… and that makes me sad.

SO
I wanted to poll the audience, as it were. I’ve got a few ideas… so pick the one you like best.
(1) In law school, I re-wrote the X-Men movies so that they would be interesting, closer to Comic Book Source, and still have a diverse cast. I could go back to that/re-do it/expand on it.
(2) I have a compendium reference guide for every Avengers Comic Book from the beginning of the series up until the year 2000. I could use that to write movies/tv shows that would be closer to the comic book source and still entertaining.
(3) I don’t know how exactly I would do it, or if I would be any good at it but… there is a novel that I think is an essential read for fans. The Life and Death of Superman is everything that is wonderful about the Superman books. Whenever people ask why the Zack Snyder movie(s) pisses me off so much; I reference this book. Because… THAT is my Superman. Not the insane ass-hat Snyder created. I could try to do a dramatic reading of that novel. Find an audio website that lets me upload in a fashion that I could link here… do a dramatic reading (like a chapter a day) in order to share that book with people. It is an option.
(4) I don’t know how exactly I would do it, or if I would be any good at it but… there is a novel that I think is an essential read for fans. Knightfall is an essential book in the Batman fandom. It is the introduction of Bane… it is the moment that the Batman was broken, crippled, left to rot in his own misery. When people ask me how similar Dark Knight Returns was to the comics… I laugh and say that my answer is found within the pages of Knightfall. I could try to do a dramatic reading of that novel. Find an audio website that lets me upload in a fashion that I could link here… do a dramatic reading (like a chapter a day) in order to share that book with people. It is an option.

And Now A Brief Comic Book Social Consciousness Soapbox Piece…
Whenever people complain about race in comic book movies; we are instantly called racist. Normally, I call bullshit and get offended. And personally, I reserve that right… because I am that way no matter the ethnicity. But not every comic book fan complaining is that way about every ethnicity. Because… yeah, there were a lot of people (myself included) that are upset about a black Johnny Storm. Johnny Storm is the twin brother of Susan Storm… I don’t care what you think, science dictates that you cannot have twins of different ethnicitys… and no matter what your excuse or social-justice reasons… that doesn’t make it okay. Here’s where I feel alone, though, and why I understand why people call my kind racist. Maria Hill. In the movies, she’s played by Cobie Smulders a white Canadian actress. I like her. But Maria Hill is hispanic! If we are going to speak up on behalf of white characters changing ethnicitys; we must speak up for “ethnic” characters being white-washed. Black Widow is white Asian (Russia); Blade is black; Ororo Munroe is African; Maria Hill is Hispanic; Dr Kavita Rao is East Indian… comic books aren’t the Pro-White, Pro-Male stereotype people think.... but allowing the movies and TV shows to arbitrarily change the ethnic background does effect the character! Maria Hill takes over during the Marvel Civil War… you honestly think her ethnic background doesn’t influence how she deals with Government versus People? Black Widow started as a Russian Spy and betrayed her government… you don’t think that should be a part of her movie-persona? I mean… ethnic backgrounds effect people’s lives, perspectives, and relationships… randomly changing them doesn’t make sense. Okay, that’s my soapbox.
