because you in poetry

Don’t believe in the cult of anyone.
Great things happen
through the cooperation of many
or massive dumb luck or both.
Don’t believe that anything is magic
other than maybe you.

Because if you can imagine, you can relate.
If you can relate, you can empathize.
If you can empathize, you can save the world.

Because to hell with what works.
Let us be humane and
figure out how to make that work as we go.

Maybe you aren’t big-time
because the real people need
the shine of your gifts more.
Maybe the rich and famous
already have their reward.

Because you,
you are our reward.
You are a finer thing
than the men in the mansions will ever know.
Thank you for sharing
your gift with us.
