This was “my” fun but it served as a report as well.

I had the “masque” saved so it was always overwritten. What did it contain?

Staged Power for emergency use. Power set out online, due to mechanical failure, usually locked up traction motors.

ETD’s End or Train Device or FREDS F’ing Rear End Device.

Depending on my shift, as a trouble shooter, I always rotated our ETD inventory. Kept them charged and ready. If we needed to ship out we did, and kept the longer dates. We never kept more than four total, and sent the rest to Denver.

ETD’s like Locomotives had a 90 day inspection date. Most were sent to Kansas City for repair and overall integral inspection.

A close up of a Union Pacific ETD. Although they are all the same. Just radio codes. 21074 is the identifier and the radio code for the ETD. UPRQ is the ownership. so the unit is UPRQ 21074 and will show that on the AEI Reader. The BIG SQUARE RECTANGLE is the flasher unit for night operation. The handle under 21074 is for transporting and applying the ETD to the Draw bar. The RED Rectangle is the battery pack. Below the Handle is the ETD fulcrum screw device. There is a “jaw” clamp that allows attaching into the coupler.

A typical “Marry Box” These can be placed onto the control stands of older locomotives. The Computer screen locomotives, have an ETD module. These allow the engineer to just key in the codes.
