Cross dressing bulldozers. in blackpropaganda

I see that there is a furore since ISIS (not the river on which Oxford stands but the Islamic State) are being castigated for bringing in bulldozers to raze the ancient city of Nimrod in norther Iraq - built by the Assyrians in 1300BC. Buildings and monuments with enormous historic value will be lost forever. They claim that monuments etc are not Islamic. I certainly sad - but find their arbitrary destruction of human life somewhat more distressing and as a historian I remember that such destruction is not confined to countries outside Europe or indeed England.
The Dissolution of the Monasteries by Thomas Cromwell for Henry VIII in 1536 was a means of taking the riches held by the orders - but also was accompanied by statue breaking, the destruction of wall paintings, and any images since the new Protestant religion was against such things. You can still see the destruction i many cathedrals. Such is the nature of intolerance - in the end we all lose out.

Heavy stuff to start with today - and soon I hope I will be able to rejoice that the election debates between political leaders here will be jettisoned. They are invariably a waste of time and money - and I blame the 1960 debate between Kennedy and Nixon for creating a false impression that they make a difference. Cameron is not scared - just aware that he has most to lose - and will bluff it out until people could not care less - actually I suspect they could not care less anyway. In the end the Scottish National Party will have the casting votes in a new parliament - and people in England will be arguing they should have had independence and f****d off!

And David Walliams has split with his wife because she does not like his cross-dressing on TV - I suppose we have to ask the question - was it because he was always wearing her thong? We should be told. Much more interesting than political debates. Here he is in Little Britain
