This is my annual entry when the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards programme has been on.
I hate the thing but I am drawn inexorably to it just to check it is still as awful as it was last year.
And it was.
It is the poor man’s Oscars - celebrating the British film industry but depending on American actors crossing the pond to give it some credibility - and given kudos by coming from the Royal Opera House in London.
It is a night of Luvvies.
Newly married Stephen Fry for the 10th time - and they really do need to get some one else in to give it some real edge.
It was recorded - so the broadcast began two hours after the ceremony started - you can see why - it could be interminable if they could not edit it down - but the downside is that there is no surprise - we turned over to ITV News at 10 pm and found out who got Leading Actor well before it was broadcast on the BBC.
They roll out actors and actresses who cannot read the autocue to present the awards - although it would be worth watching again David Beckham (well known ex-footballer and underwear icon) struggling with it - getting all the emphases wrong. Joshing with Fry if they have the confidence to ad lib.
The cuts to the people who failed to get the awards clapping the winners is always good though.
The best bit - Mike Leigh - who should have been nominated for Mr Turner - getting a Fellowship of the Academy ( meaning you are now a ‘national treasure’) and being his own man - particularly about those who finance films - his final words to those who refused him funding -‘May they rot in hell’.
So did I enjoy it - of course not - but it is car-crash tv - a kind of B movie before the main feature on the Oscars - something to watch while doing something else.
I should like to thank my family............
