New government! in Stuff

I can’t believe I stayed up last night watching the election results over the women’s Australian Open tennis final! What is WRONG with me? :D
It was pretty col though. And very surprising. One channel was telling me it was an LNP win. Another channel was saying it was a Labor win. Which one IS it!? God-dammit, I wanted answers! I’d voted Greens, but had preferenced Labor (Obviously).
What I find amazing is that we have a political party called the Liberal Party (Or Liberal/National Party rather), but there is nothing Liberal about them whatsoever. I think it’s since the merging of the two parties (Liberal and National) to create the LNP, because I never remember the Liberal Party alone being such cunts. They were progressive, as the name would suggest.
But along comes the National party (who are pretty much all the rural vote - my dad’s only ever voted National his entire life - surprise surprise - and complained when they merged because he didn’t like the Liberals - why would he? My dad lives in the 1950’s still.)
So, even me, became surprised when I realized Labor was the better party to vote for! The LNP were absolute assholes! They had to still appeal to the National vote, and to do so, they had to become ‘traditional’. Anyway, this is more Federally (as our current Prime Minister is the LNP leader) and I just voted in our State Election.
So the results are mostly in, and it’s very tight. A government still hasn’t been formed, as there are three undecided seats and it currently sits at Labor 44 seats won and LNP 40 seats won. Katter’s party holds 2 (Christ help us) and an Independant holds the final one. 45 seats are needed to hold government here in Queensland, so as long as ONE of those three ‘too-close-to-call’ seats goes to Labor, we’ll have a new Premier!
Which means our version of Hitler is gone! He lost his own seat (the second Premier to do so in HISTORY) to a wonderful women with a heart of gold in the seat of Ashgrove. He conceded defeat last night and ALSO announced his retirement from Politics. My smile could have lit up the room.
That’s another thing that’s changed in my view of Politics. Newman was a great Lord Mayor. He actually was. He did shit.
But as for our state Premier? No. Just no. He pissed off so many people in such a short amount of time and it was his way or the highway. My older brother had to work with him at one point and said he was completely arrogant and didn’t listen to anyone. It didn’t surprise me. I can read people pretty well. Plus there was his background of an ex-army sargant, so, surprise surprise.
That really felt like the longest three years ever. Then again, it went fast as well. I guess a lot has happened in my life. To see Labor go from their 9 won seats at the last election back to 44 is completely awesome.
There is still a chance of a hung parliament. They did say on the news tonight that Labor should take hold of government by tomorrow :)
Even walking to work it felt different. I felt good! WAY better than I did the previous day, that’s for sure. I was just walking along in the hot morning Queensland Summer sun and thinking to myself, “It feels like a huge weight has been lifted.”
The fact Newman got kicked out of his own seat says a lot about how the citizens of Queensland feel.
And since Victoria and now Queensland have gone Labor in their state elections, Phony Rabbit is shaking in his boots. And so he should be.
Once we get rid of that dickhead as well (and I backslap everyone who voted for him across the face), we might, MIGHT finally be able to get back to a progessive country.
Of course, there are certain friends on my Facebook who are avid LNP supporters who were bitching and moaning about how screwed our state is going to be now. But I’ve always been about the basic fundamentals of governing. It’s like the commentators on TV were saying, “Aussies do not like a government who lies!”
I think every government has to lie, but Newman was a fucking piece of work in my eyes. Christ, I wasn’t around for the Bjeike-Peterson era (thank fuck) but I’d probably liken it to those times.
Anyway, that’s enough political shit from me. We’ll see how things go, hopefully Labor can gain this one final seat, and life can go on as normal.
Looking forward to a sleep-in tomorrow. Did 36 hours this week. Most I’ve done in years! :P
