author: Sherwood Anderson

This small book, written about a century ago, describes life in a small rural town - population less than 2000.

Each character in the book, written in short story format, stumbles through life. Mostly they seem to give in to wants and desires, then pull back, confused about what they were going to do.

It was a time before most of the entertainments we take for granted. To pass the time, mostly they went out for a walk in all kinds of weather and walked for miles and miles - either alone or with “a girl or a guy”.

Most people hadn’t gone to college and few even read - some read newspapers, but many didn’t even do that.

Life was not easy, there were few conveniences, and little security. They lived day to day each day similar to the last. Life was slower, simpler. Each person’s story was private, unique.
