Alls Well That Ends Well in Everyday Ramblings

For those of you not enamored of felines, this picture from Sunday is for you.

We all survived our big day yesterday but it was quite the day. Because over the years getting Stella in the carrier by myself had proven at first difficult and later pretty much impossible, wily girl, I was super-anxious about getting Diego into his by myself as well.

But! I managed, with no blood shed. Go me.

I had pre-ordered a cab from my favorite company that hires a lot of vets for a generous amount of time to get me over to the adoption place. And they didn’t come, and didn’t come and I called and they said he was on the way… I had to call and email the folks receiving him and the poor guy was in the carrier for almost an hour and I was practically at my wit’s ends as I had a work meeting that I wanted to attend.

The driver, I don’t know, he was super apologetic, and basically gave me the ride for free but… I signed the release forms and handed the man himself over to the vet tech, who was wonderful.

Then I get on the bus to get back across town and we go two blocks and stop. A ship was coming in and they had to raise the bridge. I try texting Saint Joe to have him tell the meeting coordinator I was having logistical issues but got no response. (Turns out he changed his phone number and forgot to tell me.)

But! I was only seven minutes late to the meeting and got said what I needed to.

Later I had a private meeting with my boss to talk about “my concerns” about the work team transition. His idea and I was anxious about that too.

But! He reassured me that he understood that I wasn’t trying to be obstructionist. And we had a useful chat and I think I will be able to deal with the changes. They are going to try to keep the folks from the Evil Empire as far away from us as possible.

We’ll see how it goes. I am willing to keep a slightly open mind about it all.

In the afternoon I walked over to get Diego. It was a lovely very cold trip. They had told me to pick him up between 5 and 5:30. It never occurred to me to call. I thought they would call if there were issues. They told me that they would call me if he was ready for pickup early.

They hadn’t even started on his procedure! The clinic works with volunteer vets and vet techs and provides some low cost services for folks who can’t afford them. They did a sterilization on a nine year old German Shepherd female whose owner is a bit challenged in the reality department. He was there with his mother, the guy, not the dog. And there was another dog with some sort of face repair and a sweet big old lab with a huge stone in his bladder. There was a parade of homeless dogs getting walked by volunteers.

This large old pit bull lab mix named Lois was afraid to walk through the lobby. Oh! It was all quite entertaining (even though I was so tired I wanted to cry) and then this wiry tough girl vet tech (that I had not seen before) comes out in her toque and jacket and starts exclaiming to her friend…”We had an amazing day, so many complications… we had to do an enucleation of this kitty’s eye and…”

I gasped. “You took his eye out?” I was sitting right there, she had ignored me.

I thought they were just going to sew the lid shut. She was all excited, no, he’ll be better, it won’t be a big deal, its all fine and then disappeared in the back.

The vet who performed the procedure came out a few minutes later and spent a fair amount of time explaining what had happened and why. Before Diego was born his eye fused to the back of the socket and they hadn’t seen that earlier when treating the infections. He’s got some unusual teeth too. He is quite the unique guy.

Once I got over the shock of it, my squeamishness I was fine. He’s been operating without this eye for his whole life and I was actually relieved that it was congenital and not the result of trauma as a kitten.

The cab I ordered then came right away and Mr. Loopy Paws and I were thrilled to be home.

He is doing absolutely fine today, eating, using his box, playing. Amazing!

I am a bit of a basket case though. :)

The thing that touched me the most about the whole long complicated day was that Diego knew he was home. That this is his home. After less than a week. Aww.

Of course, Diego knew he was home! So glad he is recovering. May he heal quickly.

His heart is well aware that he is well-loved there .. how nice to have that demonstrated!

Oh my goodness, that vet tech needs to learn some people skills! I am always delighted with cat photos. Pretty leaves are good too.

Glad that Diego knew he was home. {{Hugs}}

I am so encouraged to 'hear' that your two new pals are settling in so easilyand quickly. Bandit did the same, negotiating peace with all the animals who already lived with us--it only took him a few days. I am certain these two were meant for you and you for them. I had a cat, my first one here in Our Town who had some congenital abnormalities. He only had one testicle, he had double eye teeth. The vet said there was probably another one as these usually come in threes with cats. Who knew? Anyway, I am thrilled for you and for the cats.

So glad it was a fairly straight forward surgery and that Diego knows where his home is and his Mom! And you are a great one !

Oh, poor Diego!!! Reading backwards, I didn't realize that's what he had done. I'm so glad he's having such a good recovery. Weirdly enough, we thought Simon might have to have the same thing done-- we'd brought him home with us because he had to have his third eyelid removed and my dad can't do the medication thing, but it turned out he had a cancerous tumor on it. I took him to my vet and she was afraid he had another growth on his eye so for a week or so we feared he'd have to have his eye removed. So far so good, though- he's always had eye problems and I think what she was seeing had been there for years. ANYHOW, I'm very glad it's not such a bad operation.

It took less than an hour. I hope that doesn't have to happen to Simon poor guy. If he's been having trouble with the eye for a long time it might be a relief. Diego is totally unphased.
