Holy cow, it’s now Wednesday and I haven’t even had a chance to write about the Mariah concert, which was on Sunday!
Well, I did write about it over on the music forum I’m on, so to make things easier, I’m just going to copy what I wrote over there, so some of it won’t make sense, but I was on such a high when I wrote it haha.

Omg, omg, omg breathesOkay. I have since been clubbing after getting home from Mariah, so let me compose myself and I’ll explain what I thought.
.....
breathes
Okay.
Ready.
Here, I bring you my Mariah concert review (since there doesn’t seem to be a ‘concerts’ board anywhere here :P ) I’ll post about it here.
You don’t need to know about me getting there and back, but basically a friend happened to be going, so I caught the train to a station near her place, then we went and picked up one of her girlfriends, and we were on our way!
Those girls were hilarious. I hadn’t actually met EITHER of them in person, but I know the first girl through my online diary and have for years. I could tell they were good friends from the constant banter and laughing between the two of them. I threw in one of my odd jokes here and there, so I think they liked me :P
Anyway Mariah. GOD!
Well, yes, she basically was God. I was convinced that God herself had graced the stage… but let’s back up a bit to the support act.
When I first got there, there was some weird-ass KKK-dressed village-people-y guy dancing around in what looked like a karate outfit on stage. He looked as if he was on drugs and looked like an absolute idiot. He called himself “Grandmaster T” or something like that. I dunno. I didn’t really care. I just wondered what sort of pills they were handing around at this winery event.
Yes. I said winery event. Mariah was performing, in the middle of butt-f*ck nowhere, in a field. Put it this way. There were 5 kangaroos eating the grass when the girls pulled up their car in the car park, and we had to walk about a kilometre just to reach the front gate :P
The whole time I was thinking, “When Mariah sees this, she’s gonna be like ‘Nup, no way hos-ay - turn the limo around, we’re going back to my 5-star hotel.”
Granted, it’s a 5-star winery. I didn’t realise winery’s had star-rating systems.Anywoo, Mariah’s support act was Nathaniel. Now, I’ve always liked Nathaniel’s music, and have charted all three of his singles thus far. But after seeing him on stage, going on about how amazing he is and that all his singles so far were huge successes and blah-blah-f*cking-blah, it wasn’t long before I was thinking (and telling the girls), “Wow this guy is really UP himself! No wonder Mariah likes him!” - that got a laugh from the girls. I then told them about how Mariah had fired her other support act (yes, she was meant to have another one, but fired her simply because she didn’t want another female singer on the same stage as her).
So we joked around about some of the ‘demands’ Miss Mariah might come up with.Anywoo, Nathaniel finally out-ego’d himself off the God-damn stage, and it was time for Mariah to grace the stage. 7pm rolled around, so the girls made their way to their seats (Silver), and I made my way to mine (Platinum - duh!).
7:15pm rolls around, and the bitch still hasn’t come on the stage. “Lovely” I thought. I’d heard a heap of screams earlier, so her limo must’ve pulled up, so I knew she was there. Fashionably late, I understand. Makeup, outfits, all that jazz. This is Mariah after all, dah-ling.
The lights go down, everyone screams. The show’s about to begin. Only 20 minutes late. I was actually impressed. I was sure I’d be waiting there at least an hour. In fact, I was convinced I’d be offered a refund once Mariah realized exactly where she’d agreed to perform.
I pay it out, but it was actually quite beautiful this huge stage-set up in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by the winery and obviously the kangaroo’s liked it on the side we parked. A massive amputheatre setup, I guess. My platnum seat didn’t get me anywhere fancy, really. Except a lame plastic chair to sit on. The General Admission people had to bring blankets and camping chairs to sit on. Of course, it meant I was up pretty close, although I was still around about 20 rows back or so, so pictures on my phone didn’t turn out too well. I had a great view of Mariah with my own eyes though, so that was great.
So, I actually wrote down what songs she performed, in order, so I knew how to review it here later on - so thank me bitches :P
So as I said, the lights went down, the music starts up. A familar sound. Out walks that trademark hourglass figure from the shadows from the back of the stage. The curvy-blonde hair. The crowd already knew what the opening track was. It was a classic. She steps into the spotlight and the crowd went absolutely wild. Or maybe that was just me, jumping up and down like a schoolgirl who’s about to lose her virginity. Well, technically I was. I’d never SEEN THE MARIAH CAREY live before.
As she stepped into the spotlight, the dress was born. A shimmering silver long-flowing dress with a train. Through the screams of the crowd, she began the upbeat track, “Fantasy.”
It was a great track to get everyone going and into the mood. The chairs provided were useless. Everyone was on their feet. Smiling, waving, jumping at Mariah. I have no idea if she even looked at me once during the concert, but I WAS the only male wearing a hot-pink shirt in the crowd :P
“Fantasy” flowed into “Touch My Body”. I think everyone wanted to touch that body. She looked bloody incredible. I had to check my wallet for my gay-card for a moment there. Yup, still intact in it’s laminate. Phew. Who am I kidding? I’m a 30-year old guy who paid for Platinum tickets for a Mariah concert in a winery field. Ha! She’d damn well better appreciate I was there :D
After “Touch My Body” she spoke to us, asking how we all were, you know, that sorta thing. Although the thing with Mariah, is she doesn’t just TALK her words. She SINGS them. So the whole time she was singing her air-y notes, “Brisssssssbane, how are yoooooooooou?” I was seriously impressed. Yes girl, we know you have vocals. We know you’re an angel. We know you’re blessed.
By the third track, all doubts were squished. The bad rumours I’d heard of how she sounded overseas were out the window. This girl had warmed up her vocals well. She wasn’t even talking to us, but singing to us haha. I mean, yes she talked as well, because singing everything would just be plain weird, I guess.
The third track was simply outstanding. “Emotions”. I literally found myself gaping. Like, if I’d thought to take a selfie of myself in that moment, it would have been a paralytic-Mariah pose. The sound of voice, BELTING that out along with her backup singers, sounded like perfection. We were only three tracks in, but I had decided at that very monent that that was my song of the whole concert. Yep. I’m DONE.
I could have gone home happy after that track, really. But hells no! Who ditches Mariah after three tracks? Next up was, “Cry”. “Cry like a bird, take to the sky…” I realized I’d heard it before, but it must’ve been a while back. Or was it from the latest CD? Haha! Actually I think it is. Oh okay, I just checked and it’s the opening track - duh! :)) I think I was still in awe I was actually there. I still am. I’m trying to recall it all. Luckily I wrote it down, when I wasn’t taking pics on my phone and just standing there watching her. I didn’t want to spend the whole concert on my phone. I mean, everyone else there does that anyway. I wanted to enjoy the concert for what it was - the real Mariah, standing there in front of me. Besides, who wants to film the entire thing that anyone can probably already see online anyway? So “Cry” sounded awesome, especially after “Emotions”. “You’ve got me feeling emotions…” Ahhhh!
Right after that, Mariah launches into a beautiful, heartfelt rendition of “My All”. MAN, I don’t think I’ve heard a more beautiful live version of a song in my LIFE!! “My All” was one of my Mariah anthems back in the day. I remember seeing it on the U.S charts and having to look it up, and I wasn’t disappointed. Simply stunning.
Mariah then disappeared from the stage. Right away, I was back to thinking, “Yup, she’s had enough. There are bugs here. What diva does a concert with bugs around?” Actually, the only ‘bug’ I really noticed was a spider crawling on the back on the chair of the lady in front of me, and I tried to shoo it away, but the stupid thing kept staying there. I wanted to let it live. I really did. Then I thought this poor lady could get bitten and her whole night would be a bust, plus I’m assuming she’s paid lots to be here, much like myself. So poor spidey had to go. As he spun down his web, he went under my shoe. :( I had to just keep telling myself that I had in fact just saved this young woman’s life, not that she’ll know :D
Mariah comes back out (much to my surprise) and personally calls out on the microphone to me. “Matt, I saw what you just did to save that young lady’s life, and I personally just want to thank-you, as my fans mean SO much to me, and to lose one of them, and the sales of a platinum ticket, would be just awful.” I couldn’t believe it. Mariah had just called out my name in front of these thousands of people.
Clearly, you all know I’m bullshitting, so I’ll cut back to what really happened :D “Fly Like A Bird” began. Mariah had changed dresses into another long-flowing one with a train, although this time it was a hot-pink, much like the shirt I was wearing. I KNEW she had noticed me. I blew her a kiss, and she blew one back and winked.
Okay, okay, I’ll behave. “Fly Like A Bird” sounded brilliant. I quite liked it. She tried to trick everyone by asking before the song if anyone had bought “E=MC 2”, as apparently it was a track from it. Clearly I don’t have that album :PHalfway through that song, something horrible happened. A female usher came up to me, alongside a young girl and told me I was in her seat.
Immediately I thought, “Umm, I don’t f*cking THINK so mole” but the mole asked to see my ticket. Luckily I still had it even though I was given a red-wristband for my section, and I shoved it in her face. U16, and I pointed to the back on my chair. Turns out the young girl had U15 and was right next to me. I did notice that spot was empty when the concert started, but whoever was in the seat two over from that had obviously been using his lard-ass body to take up two seating spots whilst everyone was up dancing, so she assumed I was in the wrong. “So sorry, sir” the usher said, “It’s hard to read in the dark…” and she tottled off, as the young girl took her place next to me. I noticed the usher’s tone had changed from ‘Criminal’ to ‘sweet’ once she realised she was wrong. Too right you were wrong, mole :PAnywoo, the girl next to me turned out to be quite cool! She was really pretty and looked much younger than me, maybe around 24? She was dancing away and it made me feel a bit more comfy as well, so I loosened up a bit and danced away in my spot. I have NO idea how to dance, so rather, I swayed :))
Mariah finished “Fly Like A Bird” and spoke to us (in words this time) that this was the last concert on the tour! How exciting! I love final concerts because usually it means the band/singer is on a high that there will be no more after this! I wasn’t sure if she just meant Australia, but why the way she was speaking, it was as though she meant the whole tour. So because of this, Mariah said she wanted to do a track that she hadn’t performed anywhere else on the tour.
Of course that gets the crowd excited. We get an exclusive! I have no idea if artists just ‘say’ that though, but hey, who cares. Mariah can do what she wants. So she whispered to her musical director for a while and he looked really bug-eyed, as in he was thinking, “You serious??? How the F*ck are we gonna do that??? We haven’t rehearsed it!” As soon as I thought about him thinking that, Mariah says into her microphone, “We haven’t rehearsed this, but it’s not like I haven’t performed it a million times before, so this will be fun” :D
The track was “Make It Happen”. I didn’t even know it. She did a good job of pretending she hadn’t rehearsed it, if she hadn’t, because she said she stuffed up the chorus and gave a second try, and then laughed after the song had ended that she had done a verse, two bridges, two chorus’s, a bridge and verse and a chorus. I couldn’t really tell. The song sounded good though. No idea what album it was from. After that song, she broke into a medley of songs, most I recognised, some I didn’t, but all were kept really short. On her big hits, parts of the music video would pop up on the big screen behind her. It had been editted really well to suit the performances. In this case, up next was “Heartbreaker” and I squealed in excitement as the music stopped (all but the video music) whilst we all watched that classic scene where she beats herself up :D Then the live music kicks back in. SO cool. The girl next to me was in complete agreement. It was as though we’d been friends for years and had attended the concert together haha. Well, not quite. Pretty cool though! “Obsessed” was up next. I realized that I’d never seen that video before, whilst it played behind her, only heard the song countless times. “Obsessed” is one of my fav ‘bitchy’ tracks of hers, as I remembered it being written in response to Eminem?
That track seemed to cut shorter than usual and Mariah again disappears into the back of the stage. I’m actually amazed I’m remembering all this now, as I only wrote down the song-order on my phone, but I guess it only happened a few hours ago, so is still fresh in my memory. It was at this stage that the girl asked me if I liked glitter. Hello! I’m a flamer, of COURSE I like glitter. I didn’t even click to me that she was talking about Mariah’s movie :)) I admitted to her that I haven’t actually seen it and she gasped at me in horror. I know, I know, I’m a fraud Mariah-stan. I apologise. I should know and have seen every aspect of Mariah to match your stan-level, pretty girl. She seemed to disappear and back back to her seat a lot after that. Maybe in search of real fans :D
Mariah comes back on stage in a TIGHT, and I mean TIGHT, simply black long dress, this one without a train though. It was moreso a bit ruffled around her waist. I do need to point out that in every single dress she wore that her tits were almost falling out. Like seriously, that girl has some nice badonka-bonks (DAMN you Pitbull) and the material was straining to hold them in. I’m sure any lost straight men in the crowd weren’t complaining at all.
Everyone knew the song, as soon as the music started. It was “Don’t Forget About Us”. Another classic in my books. Sounded amazing. That soaring voice that can only be Mariah’s into that mic. Ahhh.
Next up was a track I was stunned she threw in. Also an unplanned addition, apparently. I nearly choked on my water when I realised she’d started playing, “I’m That Chick.” WOW, what an honour! I really didn’t predict that one. It, of course, sounded amazing too.Next up, she introduced her band to everyone, their names, where they were all from within the USA. She seems to have collected a mix from all over. Well, SHE didn’t introduce them, rather the male backup singer did whilst Mariah was out back pampering her nose or scoffing at the premises she was forced to perform in, or whatever :P
When this guy introduced the musical director, the musical director went crazy. And I mean, batshit crazy. I wasn’t sure if I was seeing or hearing correctly, but he basically jumped up and down on stage, ran back and forth, SLAMMED his hands over and over on the piano he’d been playing all night. Yes this was the same guy who was giving Mariah the ‘omg bug-eyes’ earlier on when she was whispering to him her plans to go off-course. So yeah, he went absolutely nuts. I mean geez, I get it’s closing night, but he really went for it. It actually made me feel a bit uncomfortable to watch! After band introductions, Mariah makes an appearance and performs a remixed version of “Honey”. I love that track, and she kept the chorus sounding similar, but the rest of it just didn’t really work, I thought. Sure, maybe for an “I’m desperate for money when I’m old, remix album” in the future, but I really wish she’d just sung the song we all knew. Oh well. I was happy I got to hear it included in the set anyway.
Now here’s where I love Mariah and the quote of the night from her comes in. She walks up to the microphone and looks out over the top of me and young-girl and says, “I see you all back there,” (in General Admission) “I would love to come up the back there and say hi to you all, but I hear it’s like a stick in the mud, so I ain’t doin’ that.”
And then she FLICKS HER WEAVE. Holy shit. The perfect Mariah diva moment just happened right in front of my own eyes.Straight away, she launches into “Thirsty”, which was basically pretty repetitive, although I do like that track. Julian will love hearing that she did that one :P
She nailed it, of course, but it was hardly a ballad like the following track was.Mariah disappears again, off side-stage, and we’re introduced to the dancers. Now, Mariah’s dancers are DAMN impressive. Like, holy-cow-impressive. Each one did their signature moves after being introduced. The two boys did backflips off each others backs. Another did a full gradual split in long pants. How he didn’t rip them I do not know! Then one of the girl’s leaps up into the air and LANDS in a full-split. OUCH! She made it look so easy. I’d be hospitalized for a year if I tried that!
Now, this next song surprised me. I had predicted that she was encore with this track up next. The girl next to me asked if she’d missed it when she arrived and I’d actually told her I’m pretty sure she encores with it because I’d seen the set-list in South Korea or wherever the hell it was :P So, Mariah called my bluff and decided to bring out the track next, you know, just to spite me.
She walks out on stage with another flowing dress (surprise surprise), with a train. This time a deep navy-blue and it hugged her body so tight. Every curve was extended on her body 10-fold. It was like watching a walking blue hour-glass with huge headlights grace the stage.
She talks for a little while. About how she was ‘just backstage and realized she needs to thank each and every one of us’, which she did, and then spoke about how she wrote a song many, many years ago and she wanted to say thanks and to give everyone hope. I had an idea where this was going…
The song was “Hero”. The whole crowd went wild and sung along to every single word with her. Her vocals were flawless, even this far into the set. Every note, every HIGH note and that flawless, heartfelt chorus was just nailed every time. I suddenly felt sad. Like this was a song I should be listening to with a loving boyfriend by my side. Suddenly launching into makeout mode with the pretty chick next to me would have probably landed me in jail, plus she was a girl, so I wasn’t too sure about that :P Mariah’s boobies were already confusing me.Half of me wondered if that was it! Was that the end of the show? I was SURE she’d close with ‘Hero’. It had to be her biggest hit. Then I remembered, “Wait, no it wasn’t”. She’s obviously looked at what her biggest Australian hit was and will close with that instead. I had convinced myself that predicting her new game-plan was correct :P
Anyway the next bit was really sweet. She performed the song she wrote for her kids, “Supernatural” and she constantly kept waving into the sidewings of the stage whilst singing the song and smiling sweetly. I couldn’t see a thing. I could only assume her kids were standing there. It was their song afterall, and I know she brought her kids on tour with her. The song has her kids voices in it and she tears up when she hears them sing their little part of it. It was quite sweet to see, and if she was only acting that her kids were actually there, then that’s impressive too :))
Up next was “Always Be My Baby”. Incredible. I was watching her lips to see if she was still singing live, as it sounded a lot like the album version. I was sure that most of it was live, as I was sure her lips didn’t QUITE match up on some bits of it, but who was I to doubt her now? With her backup singers and all there, she could’ve easily pulled it off live, and maybe it was just that good that I was trying to critique her by that point.
After that was a very brief performance of “Butterfly”, which is one of my all-time favourite tracks from her!!After that, everything went dark and she walks off stage. The band pretends to pack up. The crowd floodlights turn on, although briefly. Soon, it’s dark again. I swear back in concerts years ago, they used to really extend the amount of time the light was left on so that people would actually go home :D
But no, it can’t have been more than 30 seconds to a minute. The lights were back off and the stage lights were on.Mariah’s voice speaks as she walks back toward the mic, “You really didn’t think I could go home without performing this, did you?”
Yep. Here was the money-shot track from Mariah. “We Belong Together” ended the concert brilliantly. I’ll talk to you til the sun comes up Mariah!
So yes, I had a really good time. I know a couple of people I know were at the concert but I only brielfy spotted a couple of them. I only know others were there, including my friend Chris, from his check-ins on Facebook. Of course, I did that also. Hello! People had to know where I was!
I also got myself on the big-screen three times, when they did crowd shots whilst Mariah was backstage, where the crowd could play up and yell and scream and wave. I noticed myself because of my pink shirt and realised how SHIT I looked on the screen. MAN, the silver-screen is NOT for me :)) Ergh, I hated my hair mostly. It’s too bland. I decided I must dye it ASAP. Thanks for letting me know I look like crap at your concert Mariah! Much appreciated! I did wonder if she actually can see that on a screen backstage or something. Maybe.
It took forever to find the girls I arrived there with, let alone their car. I remembered we were parked forever away in a corner where the kangaroos were dining, so once I remembered that, I was fine and managed to find the girls. PHEW! I woulda been stranded in the middle of nowhere if I hadn’t.
I got home, watched the last bit of a TV show I’d been wanting to catch all week (I missed the first half because of the horrific traffic-jam trying to get out of Mariah), then got changed, freshened up a little and headed out clubbing to go and see some drag queens that were on RuPaul’s Drag Race :)
All in all, a good day!
Ergh, I have no idea HOW to just do one quote on this site. Oh well, hopefully it turned out okay :) So yeah, it was a great concert, I’m so glad I went and I’m very thankful to Erin for the lift and meeting her friend Jill. They were so much fun!
I took a happy-snap of us before it got too dark.
When I got home, I quickly turned the TV on and managed to catch the last bit of Joel Creasey’s TV show. I’m annoyed I missed the beginning of it, as I couldn’t see it earlier in the week because of work, and I’d also missed half of the repeat, but hey I was just happy I got to see the main part of it which was how it all turned out and stuff. The show was about him going back to his country-town roots and seeing if things had changed as there was a homophobic scandal there earlier on. I still can’t get IView to work on the loungeroom TV, and I have no idea why it’s suddenly not working anymore :( LAME!
As soon as the show finished, I quickly changed outfits and I was out the door again haha. I walked to the valley by myself, as I wanted to see April Carrion perform, as I am exactly like when Adam Lambert was a guest judge on this season of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’, where he basically wanted to fuck him as soon as he saw April grace the stage. Hey, I think he’s the cutest guy ever out of drag, so hey, why not go see him in drag? It’s not like I’ll probably get the chance to again.
So I get there, surprised that I also get in for free (as I’m a Fluffy member). I was prepared to fork out the $20 entry fee, but since I didn’t have to pay, I decided to grab a few, very overpriced, drinks. Like seriously, $9 for a post-mix vodka-lemonade? So I had two of those just to loosen me up a little. I didn’t have any wine back at the winery, surprisingly. Guess I just didn’t feel like it. I did have a whole pizza to myself there though haha - I’m such a porker.
When I got to Fluffy, of course I run into Ivan, of all people, who I find quite annoying when he’s drunk. Straight away he goes to me, “They’re all downstairs! 95% bottoms! Take your pick!”
I really wasn’t in the mood to be picking up anyone, and I was there alone, so I already felt awkward enough. I’d asked Vish if he wanted to come, but of course not. He did come to Bianca with me though, but his boyfriend was here with him at the time.
The club was actually pretty empty. Well, not empty, but it was FAR from full. I was thinking ‘Oh God, these drag queens are gonna think this sux’ haha. I sat down on the side seats and drank my first drink. Next thing I knew, I felt ice being thrown at me, hitting my shirt, my face etc. I had no idea where it was coming from!! Sure enough, I finally realize when I see Ivan at the front of the dance floor looking at me sitting there, like a Nigel-no-friends haha.
He comes up to me and says something. I think it was that someone was there that we both knew, and I should say hi, so he was trying to drag me off the seats. They aren’t really ‘seats’ as such, but moreso a long carpeted ledge on both sides of the bottom dance-floor room.
I didn’t know who he was talking about. The only other person I recognized was Luis, who is this bear-type guy who is a manager of one of the stores of the company I work for, but we don’t really talk. He was in his hairy-beast clique, and I was, well, alone. I didn’t recognize anyone else Ivan was with, so I just ignored him.
I realized I couldn’t just keep sitting there, so I got up and went to grab another drink, as those small glasses don’t last long. They must make a KILLING off of alcohol prices there. I’ve never known them to have a ‘happy hour’.
So I’m at the bar and this guy I know of, Michael, comes up to me with another guy, and he goes to me, “Happy birthday.”
I gave him a confused-as-hell look, since my birthday isn’t for another three weeks or so. he continues, “For next month.”
Now, I was pretty alarmed that this guy knew that. I didn’t know him that well at all, other than he’s my friend, Matt’s, old housemate.
Also, it was such a random thing for someone to say straight-up to someone.
Anyway, he introduced me to the guy he was with, his boyfriend, and I shook his hand.
Michael then grabs my hand, and puts his up against it.
I have massive hands. And he has tiny hands. Like you could literally put two of his hands into one of mine. His hand barely covered my palm.
Anyway, I order my second drink, and then Michael says this to me,
“I’ve heard rumours…” and smiles.
RIGHT in front of his boyfriend.
I doubt the boyfriend would have heard it over the music, but man, really??
Such a strange and random situation.
I then go onto the dancefloor for a bit with my drink (as you’re allowed to there), and my friend Rhys comes up to me. He’s always there, as I’m pretty sure he has Mondays off work. We ‘boogie’ for a bit and I congratulate him on his new boyfriend. He goes, “Third time lucky!” haha. I hadn’t seen Rhys since our chat at The Wickham that time after Moe’s birthday party last month, so it was awesome to see him again.
The show was soon on afterwards, but I only stayed for the first show. I didn’t hang around for the second one, even though I’m pretty sure it would have been shortly afterward. I took a few snaps that turned out better than the ones at Mariah did.
First was Jiggly,
Then Jujubee, who I feel looked the most amazing out of the ‘girls’.
Followed by my drag-crush, April,
Yeah the nightclub-lighting didn’t really work for me, so it wasn’t a good day with the phone-camera haha, but I did take heaps of Mariah pics, just not really any decent enough to share.
Since Sunday/Monday when the above all happened, all I’ve done is a work shift, gymmed a little (I’m so proud I’m hanging around the 88kg mark! Who would have thought it?), and tonight I went to Chermside briefly with Vish. Angelo was meant to come as well, but he wasn’t replying to Vish so not sure what was going on there. So just us two went and listened to music and caught up and chatted, as we do.
I told Vish the strange situation that happened with Michael at Fluffy, and he explained that before Fluffy, he and Michael were talking bout me. I don’t know what about, but it suddenly made sense where he’d gotten the birthday information from. Geesh. At least now I don’t think I have some crazy stalker on my hands. Thanks Vish!
He leaves in a few days again.
