Can they do that? in At the foot of the hill

Got a notice that our lease has to be renewed by the end of the month. Also, they are increasing the rent by about 4%. They did that last year, too. Where do they think retired people can dig up that much every year? Our Social Security raise is supposed to be about 1% I think…and it seems like groceries have gone up at least 30% in the last year. So do we eat or pay the rent? Starve to death, or become homeless?
Our upcoming trip to California may end up being our last hurrah before we have to change our whole life-style. I’m trying not to think about it until we get back.
