The Remembrance Service in London today will be ‘ringed with steel’ according to some papers - but when we were there anyone going into Whitehall had to go through major security anyway. It just shows the nature of the present threat to aspects of life in the UK - and the irony is that today is the 25th anniversary of the breaching of the Berlin Wall. An old enemy celebrating liberation - and the beginning of the re-establishment of a unified Germany.

We shall be going to our local war memorial for the annual remembrance - I have relatives who died in the Second World War - and I think about them, even though I never knew them. I do have the telegram sent to tell them of the death of my uncle in the Merchant Navy blown up by an aerial torpedo.

Meanwhile, yesterday was cooking day - SW… was amazed - I started off in the morning baking bread, followed by making my form of ratatouille, more a pepper sauce. I made minestrone soup for lunch because it was a grey, drab day - eaten with my freshly baked bread - then for dinner I cooked a lamb shank - 90 minutes in the oven with stock and wine, onions and grain mustard mixed in half way through. Eaten with mashed potato, and some pepper sauce. The meat is tender off the bone, the gravy is rich - and you get lots of brownie points.

Sorry to hear about your uncle. I have relatives who were veterans of the second world war also, but I think they were lucky enough to come back alive. It's humbling, really, thinking about war, and all the sacrifices so many people have made for its causes.

The food you made looks amazing!!!!
