When I was a kid I loved horror, science fiction and fantasy. I lived in it to escape my home life. I enjoyed Halloween until about 22 years ago when I got divorced. I now try to avoid memories triggered by holidays. Bittersweet memories.
I encountered true “Horror” in life as I have grown. I no longer see “Horror” fiction as that. It is fantasy. Some of it is very sick fantasy. If I want to be horrified, I will look for things on the net that actually happened. Most of what is “horrible” in life is stomach churning stuff we try to block out so it will not drive us insane. Whenever I drive or walk anywhere, I look out for Horror. The real stuff. Crime induced. Whenever I read things on the internet I try to avoid true horror. I lived a life full of fear and I no longer want to feel startled or afraid. I do not want to wonder in a flash of consciousness if I am going to die. Or others.
Horror is often accompanied by people gathered around it with cellphones in hand these days.
Zombies, vampires and mythical monsters are not horrifying. My logical self ruins the fun of it all. Gosh I am no fun.
Horror to me is war and the innocents tortured and killed by it, in it. What happened in WWII to many women in Europe and Asia? What about concentration camps? The killing fields of Pol Pot and anyone remember the My Lai Massacre?
HORROR.
Kitty Genovese.
ANY whisper of anyone being raped or raped and tortured.
I have been fascinated by the current war in Ukraine. “HORROR”. Not that fantasy shit. So much is recorded on cellphones now. Limbs blown off. Fields of bodies rotting.
HORROR is anyone talking about detonating a nuclear bomb.
Halloween is not horror to me. It is fun stuff and fantasy - unless some asshole comes at me with a knife or other weapon.
Horror is the screaming that starts loud and fades as the life of someone fades.
Horror to me becomes the right-wing attempt to take over the USA and what would happen.
SUFFERING of any creature is horror.
CANCER is horror.
Same for something like Covid that makes society fill refrigerated trucks for lack of morgue space.
Horror is watching someone or something bleed to death and fade out in your arms. It was seeing the light of a stranger child fade from his eyes as I tried to help him after an accident.
I do not want to feel horrified. I have had enough of it.
I do not want anyone in this world to know true horror.
I prefer humor to all that. Let’s all share a laugh without anyone being horrified or harmed.
But fantasy?
Have fun, kids.:-)
