My first day was a long one. It was just a lot of information to take in. I had a group orientation that lasted five hours. Then IT helped set me up with my laptop. My desk is full of stationery items from the previous mentor that was canned. It feels like bad energy. I’m going to give it all to Diego, the part-time mentor. My coordinator said he is going to need my help spending $68k by the end of the month. He asked the right girl. I do know how to spend. I’ll get my own stationary things for my desk.
Everybody there seems to be photosensitive. They don’t like the fluorescents and they especially hate their blinds open. They all sit in the dark with their desk lamps on. It’s so depressing. I won’t be spending that much time at my desk, I assume. The job sounds like it is a lot of running around. They are building a new building which we will all be moving to in the spring. It will be bigger. It’s very demure. Lots of light will come into the building, I am hoping.
I am stressing about my background checks because they are egregiously late, according to HR. She saw the receipts I sent her and she noticed that I didn’t take the conventional route. I had to fend for myself, she sent me the links 2 weeks too late and $130 later. I used a third party and they went through the RCMP. This is not her first rodeo with them, she assured me that they are on the way. Andy, my coordinator, wanted me to have one-on-one time with the kids on Thursday but I can’t until at least one of my checks come in. This is also not his first rodeo, he assures me there is plenty to do. He will use the part-timer that day and I’ll run the errands.
When I got home, I checked the mail and there were no background checks. There was just a notice from the government that they deposited $550 into my account. Everybody else got their BG checks via email and relatively quickly. I am hoping that it comes today. I really want to meet the kids. Some are as young as 6. I’m going to have so much fun.
For the last hour of the day, my coordinator finally got to sit down with Diego and me. He finally has a full team. One of the first things he explained was how he has worked with every kind of boss and he will only be respectful and tactful with us. He will never berate us in public and things like that. He also asked us to be classy and not participate in any office gossip. We are the only men in the building. There is one other but I don’t know what he does. Starting next week, we will be working 11:30-7:30 Tuesday- Saturday. That stings a little but there is time for a morning class come January. I could take one right now if I wanted… I don’t want to.
Today, I have no nerves. Finally. The commute is awful. I work downtown. I spent over 20 years avoiding downtown at all costs. Now I will be driving around it so I got to get comfortable. The drive home is an absolute gong show. That won’t be a problem at 7:30 PM so… I’ll just tough it out.
My roommate finally stopped talking about her bike. She wouldn’t shut up about boxing. She put on the Jake Paul and Tommy Fury fight. Fury is drop-dead gorgeous. Anyway, I got to get on with my day. My nerves are still shot a bit because I don’t know what today will look like. An orientation was hella easy. I don’t want to have to lose my parking spot by running errands. It is a tight squeeze.
