I’m reading The Big Book Of Vice.
In this one, each section is broken down into drugs, alcohol, sex, etc…
It goes into the history of how all came about. The one I found most interesting was What’s In All Those Bottles. At least if I remember correctly. It’s the POV of a patron talking to a bartender. The bartender explains the differences in beer, then goes on to how different liquors are made, then wine and brandy. Really neat stuff.
The story about heroin was a trip. You could get heroin, produced by the Bayer company, over the counter. However Bayer’s new product, aspirin, you needed a prescription for. WTF?
The story of Captain William “Bill” McCoy (suck it Elijah McCoy) and how he brought over the good booze on his ship during prohibition as opposed to his competitors lead to the saying, “The Real McCoy.”.
Then there was the part about cocaine. Cocaine toothache drops, oh how I’d love thee now.
It hurts.

Dentist at 10:30.
Oh ya!
In the book there is a story warning about the dangers of prescription abuse. This book came out in 1999. The Opioid Crisis didn’t exist. No one could’ve imagine how popular heroin would get again. Fentanyl, what’s that?
What also gets me in all these books I’ve read the SAME politicians that were shit then ARE STILL IN THE FUCKING NEWS NOW!!!
Those who don’t learn from history…have nothing to fear. All the information is out there, recorded for posterity, yet we as a society like chaos and turmoil.
🤦♂️
God bless America, y’all.

Cocaine is still used in medicine as an anesthetic, just rarely.
The opioid crisis as we know it is first and foremost because of Purdue. This family made a new opioid drug that they claimed was non-addictive, and they pushed it HARD. By the time it was learned that it was the same old addictive drug like the others, it was all over the place. They were fined to the tune of something like $150 million. So they made a new one, said they got it right this time, and did the same thing all over again. And you would think that doctors would have learned by now, but Purdue built a huge and hardcore marketing machine around beautiful, deceptive salespeople bringing tons of incentives. Purdue had done their risk-benefit analysis and knew that all that mattered was that they got as much of the drugs prescribed as possible. Once they could do that, the government could hit them with whatever and Purdue would still meet their family goal -- becoming filthy rich.
They were fined several billion dollars in the end and shut down. But after all the fines, the family still walked away multibillionaires. They are the worst of the worst. They intentionally hooked the nation on opioids in order to get rich. It infuriates me that people like this just have part of their massive wealth taken away and are still allowed to walk free. They should all be in jail for life. Or dead. They knew they were murdering people en masse. They knew it and they kept doing it for the money.
And then fentanyl. The problem with fentanyl is that 1) it crosses the blood brain barrier way more easily than any other opioid, making it 50-100x more potent, and 2) it's ridiculously easy to make. So drug dealers love it. Easy money. Hard to trace. Can lace everything with it.
Chinese companies keep getting into trouble with US federal groups for selling fentanyl precursors by the boatload with instructions on how to make it. With fucking instructions and even a number to dial if you're having a hard time making it, a number that will give you a tutor who will walk you through the process. Isn't that nuts? Several boats have been stopped at port and the chemicals confiscated, the companies blacklisted or fined or whatever they can do to them. The Chinese companies are mainly targeting Mexican cartels, who make literally tons of fentanyl for cheap and the bring it across the border in many different forms -- again very difficult to catch, this drug. Now, keep in mind that law in China states that companies must have government watchdog representatives on their boards, meaning the Chinese government is at minimum aware that the companies are doing this. To this writer who grew up on war strategy games for family night, this is a very clever and dark form of warfare, destroying a country from the inside. The Russians bombard us with misinformation, the Chinese bombard us with highly addictive and highly lethal drugs, and both buy up companies, land, and people to put in power.
