communicating in mist in poetry

you think it’s funny now
when we watch an old sitcom
and all the mistimings
and misunderstandings
would be fixed in a second
if the characters all had cell phones?
holy cats
how stupid will our best-laid fumbles look
when everyone has little chips in their eyes
and can download it to each other
in the time it takes us now
to text “L-O-L”?
sweet Jesus
how will we use the comedy line
“did you expect me to read your mind?”
when via little cochleal implants
we’ll all be able to?
when we’re all connected
telepathically by bluetooth?
when it will actually be a crime
to shut off our minds
to our lovers
to our co-workers
to the police?
how could any dumb father on the teevee
forget his wedding anniversary
when at a flip of a switch
his wife can beam
a reminder straight into his dreams?
you think it’s funny now
when old Sherlock Holmes stories are predicated
on letters taking days and weeks
or the whole mystery dissolves before it can even cool?
when invention has reach its height
and intention goes faster than light
brother we’ll all look like fools
we will look like cavemen
waiting on the pony express
with these paltry tools
we think are the height of excess
and I for one
am looking forward to being proven wrong
