Sir Cliff and Vicky in blackpropaganda

I definitely think summer is over. We have had gale force winds and big showers over much of the weekend - normally we would expect them sometime in September, but it looks like the jet stream is further south and bringing them over the north of the UK. I feel sorry for the people who are on holiday and hoping for some good weather. Goodness knows what it was like for families in caravans over the weekend.

The good news is that English (mainly) sports teams have done brilliantly - the cricket team took India apart to wine the series, the womens' rugby team won the World Cup, and Team GB (mainly English) topped the medal tables in the European Championships - with loads of golds. Just to say that in many cases it was as much to do with the quality of the opposition so we should not be carried away!.

And what about that Cliff Richard? I am never sure whether he changed his name by deed poll from Harry Webb - and so Sir Cliff Richard is his real name. Anyway, fancy the police having the BBC film them entering Sir Cliff's property to search it for evidence on an accusation that he sexually assaulted a lad in 1985. Sir C had not been charged, and was on holiday in Portugal - so why was he named and why all the publicity? The police, and the BBC, have some things to answer.

Part of the problem for Cliff is that he has been reticent about his sexuality for just about all his career - but not about his belief in evangelical Christianity - and the alleged assault took place at a Billy Graham meeting where Sir C performed. All this is in contrast to Vicky Beeching, the gospel singer and declared Christian, coming out as a lesbian, even though many of her fans would be totally opposed to homosexuality on religious grounds, apart from anything else.

Ah, nothing is straightforward in this world.
