Thanks, Jane Fonda in The Stuff That's Not Interesting But Is The Most Interesting Stuff I'll Write

I was listening to the one podcast I listen to (Kathleen Madigan does one where she just randomly talks about things) and I happened to hear that one of the old businesses I worked for went under.

That put me on a little bit of a Google Earth adventure where I started looking at all the places in California where I was once employed. As I was looking at the redesigned interior of the place I used to work with my little brothers, I realized how grateful I am to not be there.

This week was stressing me out because I got reprimanded by the head teacher because one of the Thai teachers reported that I was showing the students “hardcore pornography, with swimsuits and g-strings”. I’ll be honest, I was completely nonplussed. I had no idea what they were talking about because I wasn’t sure what they were referring to. I mean, we’re doing a chapter on staying fit and healthy, so of course they saw swimsuits. The textbook has pictures of people surfing, diving and swimming… but pornography and g-strings?

Suddenly, I realized what they were talking about. I showed my class an old 1980s aerobics tape that I used to do with my mom when I was 3 years old.

The reason I show the tape from the 1980s is because the ones now have actual saucy workout outfits, but even though they’re wearing “swimsuits”, they’re wearing spandex underneath. I was dumbfounded that someone saw this and thought I was showing pornography to the class.

It was serious and there were meetings, I had to go in and justify everything… It was absolutely insane.

Part of me was worrying that I would have to go back to California and resume that awful life. Living in that same place, being around the same darkness that used to consume me wholly.

In the end, nothing really came of it. This was the same video I showed in class last year and my boss came in and video recorded all the students doing it because she thought it was so funny.

But who knows…
