How do I feel about R Williams? in blackpropaganda

The first item on the news this morning was the apparent suicide of Robin Williams - and in came the appreciations of his comedy, and acting, and his general goodness. I have enjoyed his performances on film - but I always felt the public persona was a cover for someone who was very insecure - and just wondered if he was the kind of bloke you would try to avoid if you met him in a bar or a restaurant - not my cup of tea at all. I may be going against the grain - but when there are thousands stuck on a mountain in Iraq and no one can do bugger all for them - such is the power of celebrity reaching people personally - people seemed to know Williams well - whereas the people on the mountain are anonymous - sad but true - 'twas ever thus

I found Robyn Williams kinda sleazy and creepy. I was listening to him talk in a radio interview once and he was talking about strippers and prostitutes and showing the radio announcer a good time - he swore a lot - I thought he was always more on the crass side of comedy - I like some of his stuff - but he was a big drinker and incredible drug taker when he was younger - which undoubtedly led to his depression and suicide.
I just find it weird the way people go - when he was so successful - such a big $ maker - the applause he got and everyone honoring him. When he was alive did people celebrate hm this much?
If he was a poor nobody - would people still have worshipped a person so?
This is like Alexander McQueen. The fashion designer - not very popular at all in his later days - but then he's dead and everyone suddenly loves him and through he was the best ever..
I was kinda keeping my thoughts to myself about this one. Until I read this entry.

Thanks for that. Reading the obits today they are more measured and critical - I guess no one is going to be too critical when asked for a view straight after the event - but the point is few people, including three wives got really close to him

There are. Lot of rumours that Robin Williams had a mental health issue, either bipolar disorder or ADHD. The ADHD would tie in with him completely - loud, "class clown" type character but actually quite lacking in confidence and self esteem and insecure; self medicating with alcohol and drugs; addicted to sex (perhaps); died by suicide.

Oh, I loved him! I can get where you're coming from though.

The discussion on RW since the initial shock of his death have been interesting - not least the implications of his depression on how he worked. I think people could relate to him and the characters he played - but he was in some real duds too.
